Amazon non-compete

I am an L5 DS and work for Amazon Ads. My former manager was vicious and constantly bad mouthing me to my new team after transfer. The two teams are partner team, so he leveraged his power to force me to work on projects on my old team. I am considering leaving Amazon forever, but worried what my former boss is able to do. I know Amazon has non-compete, so I want to understand what types of roles I can’t consider. Amazon is literally in every business. If I want to continue becoming a DS, it is very likely that I end up somewhere that has a shopping platform and ads services. Is there anything I should be cautious about? I know some colleagues go to Walmart, others start working for target. What is this non-compete? And how can I stop my former manager from retaliation. Currently based in IL, plan to move to CA TC 220k

People don’t really care, just don’t tell your boss where you are going next.

FTC looking into making non compete illegal anyway. Work at OnlyFans in meantime, no Amazon porn yet

Non competes are illegal in California so good luck to them if you move there and get a job competing with them

Very unlikely to attempt to enforce below the L7/L8 level. You’re almost certainly in the clear as an L5.

Freaking L5, no one cares. Do whatever

Yeah I went to another big tech company as an L5 and didn’t hide it. They didn’t do anything at all. What I’ve heard is it’s only really enforced if you are at a higher level and even then they may need to make a case that you somehow have proprietary knowledge or basically learned your job skills from them. So if you’re not high level or a specialized role it’s likely fine. Also - don’t need to disclose where you’re going at L5. They’ll ask but won’t chase you with an attorney to find out either.

I also am pretty sure that the Supreme Court even said non competes are not enforceable for basically 90% of jobs

How do you know your manager bad mouthed you?
