Amazon offer Negotiation

L6 SDE. Cannot get them to move past 355 ish no matter what. It's kind of take it or leave it at this stage. Other than hard $$ what other things can be negotiated on ?

Twitch jq52 Feb 15, 2019

not much

Intel sales_bro Feb 15, 2019

Agree, not much. 355 is a chunk of change. what else are you looking for?

Microsoft Ramboman Feb 15, 2019

What level at MS?

Amazon gdSe61 Feb 15, 2019

Location, current level and yoe? 355k is at the very high end in seattle. PE range internally starts around 370k.

Microsoft Jeoff OP Feb 15, 2019

10 YOE. Current TC : 280 ish

Microsoft lMQO62 Feb 15, 2019

Need a business justification of some kind. For example, another company valuing you at a higher price. My friend at Valve was offered SDE 3 and had special approval to match comp at over 600k TC for years hired 1-4.

Seems like a strong offer to me. I’d take it. The one thing I always advise is to ask for more RSUs and less bonus. It will have a huge impact in the long run. All things equal, RSUs > Salary > Bonus

And what if Amazon stock goes down? Cash is king, that's why Netflix is considered the best TC in the industry.

Amazon amazons Feb 15, 2019

It’s all upside with RSUs whereas you’re locked in at your TC with cash/bonus. Stock goes down and they grant you more RSUs the following year to make you whole. Goes up and you benefit by exceeding your TCT. I’ve seen L6s and L7s making double their targets following this strategy, while I was naive when I joined and negotiated more cash bonus. Big mistake in hindsight. Fortunately I stayed through the bull market and rode the wave other ways. Our stock dropped the year after I was promoted to L7 and guess what - I was made whole the following cycle with a huge stock grant, which almost doubled in value the following year.

Microsoft Jeoff OP Feb 15, 2019

Yeah, I like cash too. If I am so bullish on the stock I can use the cash to buy stocks

Amazon yougotit Feb 15, 2019

I think you are close to top of the band L6, need vp approval to go beyond. It's all dependent upon how desperately your hr wants you
