I currently work at Tesla and I have an offer from Amazon (non-AWS) with a slightly higher salary. Should I stay with Tesla or take the Amazon offer? I care most about WLB, friendly and helpful coworkers, and good documentation. Current TC: $180k YOE: 4
Neither if these are your values
Hard to be picky in this job market. Can you name some better choices that are currently hiring for mid-level SWEs?
Level at both firms?
Dumpster fire or shit hole
Join Amazon, leave after a year if team sucks (very likely).
How is Tesla to work for?
My team has a pretty good culture. If you show up at 10 and leave at 4, nobody bats an eye as long as you make your meetings and get your work done (more work than other places). There is a lot of freedom in responsibilities, a lot of this comes from having an older, mature core team. Everything outside of this sucks. We never do anything as a team outside work. Salary is much lower than it should be for what you do day-to-day. Corporate politics are insane and ever-present. Documentation is non-existent. SDLC is non-existent. Most applications are held together with duct tape, adhering to standards and best practices is not a high priority. The offices are very barebones - the only food options are overly expensive food trucks with very poor quality food, or also expensive middle school hot lunch style catering in the cafeteria. Morale is low, especially with the most recent brutal layoffs and the behavior of our clown CEO.
