Peaceful Protest Hasn’t Worked and Has Been Met With Aggression.
All the fuss about clean code, being a software wiz, and at the end of the day the only company still in growth mode from Big Tech is Amazon. Shit codebase, mediocre talent, but gets the job done Tc 330k Yoe 7
Let me guess, you just joined Amazon and are drinking their koolaid
Amazon is not in growth mode. It’s been stagnant for 5 years. It just had really good time during pandemic. Shit codebase, true. And it doesn’t stop anyone from getting the job done. It causes a lot of pain for the employees but Amazon doesn’t care about the employees. Mediocre talent? No way. Amazon has some amazingly talented people.
For real, the original people in my team just wrote a bunch of unmaintainable code with 20% unit test coverage and quit the job. Did I also mention no documentation? Now I’m picking up this mess and sure as hell not fixing that. Code quality doesn’t show up on the promo doc so no one has incentive to write good code with solid tests and documentation
Which product do you work on? My team maintains above 90% coverage.
Terrible code base? Yes. Mediocre talent? Absolutely not. There is a bit of everything (every company works like that) If you are mediocre you get pipped.
Def not mediocre. It takes some level skill to constantly push out code, do it in as few revisions as possible, and not get managed out. Managers just look for work to be done, which forces you to get code in asap. And they measure some pointless metrics like number of CRs and average revisions. In the end, work gets done and that’s all that matter. Codebase is def shit as a side-effect.
You can get away with that with new projects but tech debt will eventually catch up to you and make you pay
If only that were true. Tech debt catches up to the poor fool who inherited your code after you left.
Reading above comments I understood Amazonians are extremely talented in writing shitty code.
Ah Wayfajr is come to school us.
You sound like such a loser
Mediocre talent 😂 Try passing an L6 loop bruh. Amazon also makes engineers have much larger scope of ownership per level than other companies. At Amazon engineers own operations, design and development of their systems. Not just one of the 3. This creates massive learning opportunities and builds talent internally. Those that don't learn are managed out.
The talent is there, it’s just Amazon always picks speed in the trade off with quality.
Amazon doesn't have mediocre talent. It just treats the job as an extension of the interview process and promptly serves regrets to those who fail.
It has a bit of everything. And is all you need. All the hubris about gREaT taLEnT companies is for the birds
😆 extended interview
