Code test is the most stupidest thing ever. Maybe for interns and new grad but for people in tech world such tests are stupid af. Read question quickly -> no way to clarify thoughts/ assumption -> code to get the correct output. Nothing in the universe can be more stupid.

You’d be surprised how many slick talkers can bullshit their way into a software job just knowing all the buzzwords and acting like they’ve done a bunch of stuff in the past. Actually seeing if you can program is a useful hiring bar.

Should they invest time if what you have on your resume isn’t validated at at least a minimal level? It’s supply and demand. If other people with similar abilities are willing to take the test and you aren’t, do you think the company cares? Companies weed through tens, hundreds, or thousands of applicants depending on size. This is a weeding out process. Take it if you want to work there. Don’t if you don’t. It will probably take you a half hour... this seems kind of prima donna-ish.

Just to give you an example for why these tests are good. My team is currently looking for DevOps people. So far, we have a lot of people who have a nice resume in terms of ops - it's hard to determine dev skills through resumes. During the phone interview, almost everybody failed to get a super simple coding question right. Most candidates went dead silent and were not able to provide anything at all! Thus, we decided to add the same super simple coding question to an online test - otherwise, we would waste up to 90 minutes just to notice that the candidate is not able to write basic code. What would you propose as alternative?
Recruiting good talent is hard and time intensive and this should be done to make us remember the value of the current team members.
We're talking about 4-8h a week for each engineer just for interviewing. I think it's hard to still fullfil your job if you spend all that time on people who brushed up their resume to mask not having actual development experience.
Tip: say you have an offer with G or Fb and you have a deadline. Phone screen plus onsite, no online test.
Why is a half day or whole day white boarding session OK but a 2 hour online coding test not OK? Just treat it like another 2 hours of leetcode
Cause in white boarding iam waisting my time with the interviewers time. Whereas in another case only I am wasting my time.
