I have one of the worst recruiting experiences ever, there at Amazon. 1. I was forced to go through a virtual remote, on-site interview loop (that started from 1am to 8am my time in Africa). I was told immigration is a mess and visa application will take longer even when I had already shared that I have a US Visa. 2. Then after asking they agreed to fly me over for the on-sites. Only to be canceled again due to Corona COVID-19. That I can understand and appreciate. 3. Now again the recruiter, even after being told my timezone, went ahead and scheduled a virtual remote on-site interview loop that is from 2am in the morning to 10am. I am pissed off. It's like they don't care about anyone else who lives outside the US or PST timezone. I am sure they will be pissed if I ask them to be considerate of my timezone the fifth time. Also, if they reschedule, my interviewers will change. That could be bad since two of them do like my work a lot. Advice? Should I stay up late and attempt a technical interview that late. Never done that before but I am a night owl. I can stay up late. TC: 280k YOE: 11 #amazon #google #microsoft #hiring #leetcode #interview #remote
We are being told to change how we interview. This is a dynamic situation.
that's true — doesn't mean you can't accommodate others for their time zones? Does it?
The timezone issue seems to be a miss from the recruitment team. Feel free to drop a note saying the time is not acceptable for you and they should be ok to identify better overlapping hours. Even if they reschedule, an interview completed is never dropped and only pending interviews might get new interviewers.
The problem is that I have told the recruiter about my timezone three times. They never asked about my timezone instead of days that would be OK for me. I want to give the interview to the same interviewers. Do you think if I ask for the time to be changed the interviewers will be changed?
Scheduling is handled by someone other than the recruiter, who might be new as well. (We now have dedicated roles for scheduling which we contract as well and I'm not completely happy either with the quality of work seen here sometimes. Sad story but possibly true) If you are interviewing for a particular team (or role you applied for), interviewers are unlikely to change. At most, you might get another interviewer from the same team/org.
280k what? USD? ZAR?
If it’s 280k usd in Africa this guy must be living like a king.
170k Base. Rest are benefits. This is USD. No not living like a king. Barely making it even for the masters/bachelors degree loans for both wife and I and supporting parents.
Amazon interview feels like a joke nowadays. Their recruiting teams are disorganized and generally don’t care candidate experience, I will avoid amazon if I were you.
I’d like a venti coffee. Thanks.
Thanks, that has been my experience. But it's FAANG. Never been a full time employee of FAANG
Convenience of you vs convenience of 6-8 members interviewing you in their midnight. Hmm, man you are very ill treated. Don’t interview with amazon.
I see that. I want to work out a time that works for everyone. The ill-treatment comes from changing interviews 3 times and never listening to what I said. That wastes everyone's time. Not that I am a big deal or anything. It's just useless to waste over a month in scheduling problems.
Definitely keep pushing back on the timezone
may i ask why you say that?
... do you want the people giving you the opportunity to interview to clear their schedules so they can accommodate? How about being like “hey thanks for the opportunity that most don’t receive” rather than whining about the hours you have to be awake. I answer emails at 5am and 10pm, and am super grateful for my paycheck.
You are right. I also do that till 11pm in the night. But after that, it's not possible for me to do that physically. Can you imagine whiteboarding at 3amI can't. It's a real problem for me. I'm not whining. Trying to figure it out.
This is the LP test. Have backbone and pushback on timezone!
haha that could be it.
Ask for accommodations...maybe come with an 8-hour window that mostly works well enough for everyone.
could the interview be split to two days? that's what microsoft did with me
Or wait till this whole thing settles down? I don’t think there’ll be a problem if you ask to reschedule
interview has already been scheduled three to four times. not sure asking again for adjustment of time zone will help
