What happens if you claim lumpsum relocation benefit and did not move for reasons evolved after the fact (pandemic, family, etc)?
Trolling aside.. answer if you know it.
So, my document with relocation details said I had 1 year to use the relocation benefits (lump sum, flight, hotel, etc) but it doesn't have anything specific past that. Not sure if they will ask to pay back, tho I do eventually intend to relocate
You need to remain employed with Amazon for 2 years to avoid payback of the lump sum. If you leave before 2y, you'll have to pay back a prorated portion.
I think one year is for claiming the lump sum. The only way they'd know if you moved or not is through payroll address I think. Good to ask your manager.
Lol I claimed it and never moved
I will suggest talk to your manager and cut a tt to finance. While your intent may not be fraudulent, it can look like this. Amazon is very strict about this and people have been fired in past for financial impropriety.
I am in the process of joining Amazon and relocating. Recruiter told me payroll address needs to strictly match my home address mainly for tax compliance reasons. Always better to be honest about where you are working from.
You're asking two questions actually: - By default the relocation package is expected to be used with your first year of tenure. Given the circumstances, you can worh with your Recruiter/Manager to figure out how to extend that. I have exactly the same case in my team, it's not uncommon for those hired during the pandemic. - Every relocation cost requires you to work for the company for 2 years. If you leave before, you'd need to pay back a prorated portion.
Thank you. Does the proration works from the date I avail the benefit? Or from start date?
From the start date.
Im in the same situation. Took relocation but never moved from SF to Seattle. Still deciding if I’m going to move end of summer. Nothing in the contract stipulates actual moving, and if they want relocation money back, I feel like it’s only square to prorate me the Bay Area base differential (since I’ve been receiving a Seattle base this entire time). This would be way more expensive than the relocation to begin with. Will be interesting to see what happens.
