Amazon scamming people out of referral bonuses?

A friend referred me to Amazon Music, a few days later they reached out, and after interviewing I received an offer (yay!). The day after I got the offer call, I received a form email saying they weren't going to move forward after the referral to Amazon Music. A few hours later I received a call getting the compensation numbers from them. I hadn't applied in anyway other than having a friend submit my resume for a referral. Was this a mistake or is Amazon really scamming people? Does Amazon have a referral bonus? I suppose the outcome of this doesn't matter if they don't offer that.

What kind of bonus are you referring to? The referrer gets a bonus if you accept your offer but as far as I know the actual referee doesn't

I'm talking about the bonus that would go to my friend if I accepted the offer since he referred me.

There is a referral bonus for your friend. However yes it looks like they may have tried to scam your friend out of the referral bonus... If the recruiter contacted you BEFORE your friend referred you in the system, then your friend would have gotten an email saying that you are already in the loop etc and thus not eligible for referral. Otherwise, if your friend referred you first, you would have gotten an email saying that you were referred to a position at Amazon etc. And if under referral you did not make it then you would get the rejection email.

I got the email saying I was referred by my friend and they only contacted me after that. If I decide to accept the offer I'll make sure to try and get him credit. Thanks for the info!

sounds like HR system mistake

I was scammed more than once like this in Microsoft I would submit a referral, the candidate will get a call, gets and accepts the offer. Then the HR tells me that it wasn't my referral but the candidate was already found by some head hunter

I had that happen once when referring a friend. Have your friend reach out to the recruiter for the role. They can fix it.

Yeah definitely have them fix it, also take note that the referral bonus only takes place if you successfully survives Amazon for 6 months or more :)

Not sure if this happened in your case, but here's what I know also happens: The first person to submit a resume gets the referral. I know some recruiters would validate your email and submit your resume that THEY create from your public profile to companies where you might apply. That need not trigger an interview call. Later, if you apply or if someone refers you using the same email address, the recruiter gets the referral bonus and you may not even know it! Guard your email address and clarify this early in the process if someone has referred you.

Airbnb Wiwgdydbwi OP Jul 21, 2018

I don't think this is the issue as I got a confirmation from Amazon about my friend's referral when they reached out. Thanks for the info though! I wouldn't want that to happen in other situations.

Scamming or simply the process slipping through the cracks. Fix it with the recruiter after you accept and finalize joining date.
