I normally “sell to cover” yes stupid I know. But I’ve shifted to “sell all” so that I can pay off my stupid loans and then reinvest in voo or vti on future vesting dates. My question is what time does the stock sell? Is it when the market opens or when the market closes? TC: 275k #personalfinance #investments
Why do people sell though? Don’t you want to keep long enough to not be subject to short term capital gains tax
Commented below, but if you sell at the vest date you don’t get charged capital gain tax (short or long). Just income tax which you pay when you sell to cover. Also you sell your rsus to pay off debt and invest in a more diverse portfolio. I’ve made the mistake of not selling and reinvesting my whole career.
I can’t believe this gets posted multiple times a week and people still incorrectly think holding will avoid short term capital gains.
Are there cap gains if you sell at the vest? Isn’t that just income tax and there are no capital gains due to profit gains
Sell to cover is the right idea. Amazon stock going 🚀
I have stocks that vest on May 21st, which is Sunday. Does that mean they actually will vest on the following Monday or this Friday?

Be nice to H1B people
I’m not sure the exact but all I remember was the fill being bad compared to the daily average price. Would recommend sell to cover then selling yourself later
Probably not a good idea given short term capital gains tax unless I hold on to the vested shared for over a year, and yes I do have some of those
The tax you pay is on Gains, meaning if the vest price was $110, and the stock price goes to $112 when you are selling. You would pay short term cap gain on $2. Which isn’t a lot. Unless you have a lot of $ vesting and provided the stock goes up quite a lot by the time you sell.
