Really torn on making decision between Amazon vs Bloomberg (both in NYC). Amazon: ~ 166k TC + 7k reloc Bloomberg: 170k TC + 40k sign bonus (paid in first yr, will have to pay back prorated if leave before 2 yrs) + 10k relocation Both have pros and cons based on browsing here and common knowledge: Amazon looks better on resume, possibly better technical growth and career trajectory, but worse WLB and culture. Bbg has good culture but there's a risk of working with legacy systems, less opportunities for technical experience growth compared to FAANG Which option is better right now? My possible exit ops are going to FB/G NYC, FAANG on West coast, or hedge fund in NYC. Would like to get thoughts and opinions in the comments! Additional questions for people who've worked at either or both: - Do most new grads get their top team preference after Bbg training camp? - What are some good engineering teams at bbg? - Do most new grads stay at bbg move to FAANG after 2 yrs? - What is career growth at Bbg vs Amazon NY? - Is overall culture better in Amazon NY vs Amazon Seattle? Thanks! #bloomberg #amazon #tech #offer
I hate Amazon with a passion and have posted about it ad nauseam, but given these numbers and being an unattached new grad...100% Amazon. No question. How did you get 96 RSUs as a new grad?! Edit: go with bberg if you only got 28-30 stocks.
Be ready for a very high probability of dissatisfaction at Amazon. If you are okay with that, make a video to yourself that you are ok with it for future. Else pick Bloomberg
You kidding me? Bloomberg. Go with the higher base for NYC.
Any other reasons beside TC/base?
I made that jump. Lol. Not Bloomberg but from Amazon to a Hedge fund. Best decision I made. Amazon damn near killed me with work and my wlb was non existant. Your life will be so much better and Bloomberg is great on your resume.
Amazon requires you to deliver results on Day 1, it doesn't have any bootcamp and the infrastructure is super complicated inside Amazon, If you can't deliver results let's say resolve ticket perfectly from the second week, you'll be PIPed, why I say perfectly? It's because some shitty mgr always monitoring you Code Review and take note of every comments as the evidence for PIP. This is what I experienced in Amazon, I was piped in the second month, think about it, 2 month, maybe you don't need to write a single line of code in bloomberg in the first 2 months but in Amazon, It's unqualified
Wow.
I’d go with Bloomberg, but lemme answer your questions. - Yes, you’re guaranteed to get one of your top 6 preferred teams. Most of the time you can get your top 3, but I’ve seen cases where it didn’t happen. And these are top 6 out of 20-30 teams. - Depends on your definition of eng. There are teams that have a move fast culture that are still nerdy and care for good code quality, but ultimately end up not writing as much docs/tests. Then there are the google-type teams that want a lot more docs and testing with changes, and move a lot slower. The second type is seen a lot in Software Infra. - Hard question to answer, some people get the right opportunities at the company and stay, but speaking to others, generally google NYC in particular hires a lot of BBG employees. - No idea :)
Cant say much about amazon but right now I'm in training at BB and I feel extremely supported! So that feels good.
I can’t speak for Amazon, but I’m currently going through the BBG training and I’m liking it a lot so far. It’s a supportive culture and they try to match you with a team depending on your interests in tech stack and product.
BB is nice WLB, more TC and nice tech stuff if you end up in decent team not doing legacy. They really care about you.
Have many a friend that Amazon chewed up. One friend left work all together. Became a monk. Serious. And don't think for a second that you will see all of those RSUs. Look at vesting schedule. Look at the average time new grads spend at Amazon. You'll get either 5, max 20% of that. There is more to life than TC. I have a career here at Bloomberg. I learn. I have a life. And I enjoy it. Not saying it's flawless, but way better than Amazon.

Why is our country owned by Israel? I don't want my tax dollars fund genocide. How can we stop this nonsense?
There is very small very very shitty bot camp for Amazon. You can do it within 1 or 2 day. Amazon is good if you get good team. But it's nightmare if you get hooked up with bad team. There are alot of bad teams at the Amazon. If get bad team then they will break you down. Mentally torture. And if that happens in your start of career then it will take alot of time to recover that confidence. And if you are visa then definately not Amazon.
I’m not on any visa. But couldn’t the same logic be applied to Bloomberg’s team? It seems like there’s only a few teams that use newest tech stacks. could you elaborate more on the Amazon boot camp?
To give you straight answer about boot camp You can complete it within 1 or 2 days. There is no performance analysis on boot camp(No training for new grad) You don't get to pick the team.
