Amazon vs Expedia Intern

I have to decide between Amazon and Expedia software engineer internship (2023 summer). I will graduate in December, 2023 and care about return opportunities as well as future career development. Need some help for making the decision. I am also worried about the impact of Amazon recent layoff. Thanks! Update: Both in Seattle. I might need to renege the offer of Expedia if I go for Amazon. TC: Amazon 9138 per month. Expedia is 51 per hour.

Amazon. Seriously. They won't lay you off as an intern and you can use their clout and name brand to boost your career for the next decade. Go to Amazon. Case closed my friend. It's an internship. When you put it on your resume everyone will know it's temporary to begin with. Interns don't get fired. Also even in the worst case with no return offer from Amazon, you're still going to have a leg up at finding jobs. Don't turn down a FAANG internship for fear. Please kid, really hope you read this. Take the Amazon internship, no matter what happens, you win. If you go with Amazon Internship goes well - You get a return offer. You work at FAANG so you've got money and a great career trajectory. Happy happy. Internship goes poorly or just medicore - No return offer, but now you have Amazon on your resume. FAANG on your resume. Expedia will want to interview. Most every Fortune 500 will respond to your applications. Finding a job will be orders of magnitude easier. Other big tech will want to interview you. You might not be at Amazon, but your chances of landing somewhere else that's good become quite high. Go to Amazon.

I agree with you on Amazon’s potential boost to OP’s career. Big question is how much does OP value any certainty of return offers? I can’t comment on how this will play out at Amazon. I believe this is same for most tech companies.

Yeah except chance of getting return offer at Amazon is at historically low. Almost 0 if you check Meta internships

You can't go wrong with either offer, both have brand recognition.

Hey OP, did you apply through reference? My brother is also looking for intern positions.

Amazon looks better on your resume. I would go with them. You will probably learn more there as well.

Go Amazon! Once you get it on your resume it will carry you for years to come. My first job was 1.5yrs at FAANG (doesn't start with A) and I know for fact it's helped my resume bubble up top the even though I have worked there in over 10yrs and have never worked at another teir1 company.

Amazon for internship you will do better work there. Expedia only if you want to chill and not learn

Agree Amazon seems best for resume. My Amazon job has pretty much set my career onto a rocketship. People know you can deal with serious grind after Amazon! Also, interns I have worked with do pretty substantive work in Amazon. I daily use tools built by interns. A lot of managers go to intern presentations, so it is a good time to shine with people who may be interviewing you or hiring you. That said, I do not think an internship is a guarantee for a job offer at any company but especially Amazon in general and especially now they are in hardcore hiring freeze/layoff mode for past 6 months. Our teams were told very unofficially but from our org leader that Q4 is the earliest retail/stores will start hiring again. But it might work out if your goal is to start a job in 2024. Best of luck with whoever you go with! Either way, good problem to have.
