Hi all! I am up for a promo at Amazon from L5 to L6 next quarter. I also have offers from Google and Shopify. What are your thoughts? Amazon worth the wait (understanding a promo is not guaranteed)? L4 at Google is a bit of a low ball but might set me up for better success and quicker promo since I am a cusp L6 at Amazon? Shopify worth it for the more immediate (though slight) promo despite the typical lower pay? I also am in talks with Dropbox, Stripe, and Intuit (no offers there yet as I haven’t done the final loop). Looking for meaty scope, great PM/Engineering partners, autonomy, ability to mentor/mentee, and enough work life balance that I can spend the weekends work free with my kiddos. Here are the details: - YOE: 6 in UX (13 total if you include my past experience as a Art Director) - Amazon UX Designer L5 (current role): Base 145K / TC 220K —- Blind lists the new salary bands for L6 as 138k-186k Base / 242K-238K TC so hoping to be there for my promo - Google UX Designer L4: Base 150k / TC 268K in year 1 which includes the sign on bonus - Shopify Senior Product Designer: Base 150k / TC of 200K in year one (have yet to negotiate this one) - Dropbox, Stripe, and Intuit are all pending final loop #offer #offers #google #amazon #shopify #designer #intuit #stripe #dropbox #designer #productdesign
Provide all the information first
Amazon promo promises = clown jokes uncorrelated to reality Google promo process = does not exist Shopify = growth over, decline starts in 2022 Stripe or maybe Intuit
Thanks for the feedback! Curious as to why you say that for Shopify?
Shopify's Q4 report (and underlying strategy) did not earn my confidence. Whatever strategy they're following, it's not clear that there is a single consistent, coherent direction. Examples: They're not well positioned to go directly after Amazon, yet they make it hard for merchants to use both platforms. It seems premature for them to invest dry powder in other companies (and right now those investments look weak). How old is SFN, why is it still a 'prototype', and when (if ever) is it going to offer truly competitive performance compared to other 3PL? Etc, etc, etc - just too many inconsistencies and no clear direction to create something dominant about their offerings. They just didn't present a compelling strategy that resonates for me.
Intuit stagnant, avoid
How was interview process at Google
Overall it was good! Had some last minute changes to my loop but overall it was pretty smooth. Everyone was solid. Team match process took some time as I had multiple teams interested.
Wow congrats!
Looking purely at stock value, Google is in investment territory. You can hold it for several years and it will go up. Shopify is a trade stock - it will succumb to market pressures. Amazon is close to an investment stock but not yet (not as solid as Google). Looking at brand value on your resume, Google will open a lot more doors down the road than Amazon or Shopify. In terms for culture etc., Shopify is a hit or miss for ICs (don't have great programs for development or growth and it really really depends on what team you end up on; and not many really good teams). You can coast at Shopify though. Amazon is not great for ICs as no WLB. Google is likely your best choice.
Hey OP wondering if you had to negotiate with google or was that their first offer TC? Also was that for Seattle ?
That was with negotiation and for a remote on the east coast.
Gotcha thank you!! Congrats :)
One management change or reorg and you’ll go back to step 1. No point in waiting for title change. Also, finish all loops. You’ll have more negotiation power if you do
Thanks for the feedback. Re; the loops, I’m trying to but the timelines don’t all line up nicely 😬
