Context: MS CS Student with 3 years of prior work experience Amazon / AWS Position: SDE1 (L4) Location: WA Base: $129k Bonus: $50k + $33k (year1 + year2) RSU: $111k over 4 years (5/15/40/40) Relocation: $7k McKinsey Digital Position: Engineer 2 Location: NY Base: $146k Perf. Bonus: $14.7k Relocation: $10k (need to pay back on a pro-rata basis if leaving the firm within 12 months) Tech Skills Bonus: $16k (need to pay back on a pro-rata basis if leaving the firm within 24 months) Amazon: + TC + Tech Company - SDE1 (not SDE2) McKinsey: + Engineer 2 - Non-Tech Company - TC is lower than Amazon for a higher position I would appreciate it if you can provide reasons for your choice. Thanks! #software #sde
Amazon is so much better, not only in name but in opportunities afterwards Also if you get internal promo SDE2 pay will dwarf anything McKinsey offers
I'm surprised people picked Amazon. Toxic work and pip culture, lower offer, lower level. I dunno OP, objectively seems like McKinsey is better.
>>>I'm surprised people picked Amazon. Both are sweatshops, but Mckinsey is worse for WLB.
>>>Before tech became a thing, consulting firms were the OG grind culture. The grind culture is still there, just the pay is worse.
Ask amazon to raise base and match or beat the other offer at least... but choose Amazon period. (Brand in early carrer matters and learn good inside... that should be your motto
Since the SDE1 position is managed by Student Programs and for New Grad positions they don't negotiate. The compensation is fixed by the org.
If I am not wrong you interviewed for sde 2 role at Amazon and then they lowballed you.
I did a summer internship at Amazon and received a return offer. For return offers, they don't provide SDE2 but only SDE1 positions. Also, we can't negotiate for SDE2 position for a return offer.
No brainer, obviously Amazon. Engineering at consulting companies is fake, pays low & adds no value to your profile. Amazon and Mckinsey can be compared when someone is considering product management vs business consulting after an MBA
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a MS CS new grad (even with prior 2-3 yr experience) ever offered SDE2.. anywhere. If the experience is outside US, that’s even more likely. I don’t think they’re lowballing. That’s just the policy used for almost all new hires I saw during my time And despite the negative opinions on Blind, AWS is the one of the best options for a new grad in terms of learning opportunities. Yes, it’ll be a steep curve but the experience will open lots of doors
This thread is filled with fake news about McKinsey.
Can you kindly provide some insights about Tech roles (Engineer II) at McK?

The end of Backdoor Roth?!
titles don't matter. banks would give you a VP title so don't count that as a pro
For McK, I got the call for Engineer 1 but after a discussion with the recruiter she gave me the Engineer 2 position
