Currently deciding between the 3 for new grad swe, any advice or recommendations? Commenting is better signal than poll vote. Amazon (return offer) + most well known/stable + team during internship was fine, no complaints + promotion opportunities - pip culture - seattle (want Bay Area) Redfin + small company vibes + everyone seemed nice, good culture - sf but location might change to seattle bc headcount - lowest TC by a bit (slightly less stock) TikTok + popular product, fast growth + IPO potential + Mountain View - potentially risky due to politics - Chinese culture (not Chinese) - WLB Current TC: 0 #swe #amazon #redfin #tiktok #bytedance
TikTok
i think tiktok would be cool since it’s hot right now. you’d probably change companies in a few years anyways, why not start at one of the hottest right now
Offer details !!!
I voted for Tiktok 1) it’s in the Bay Area, which sounds important to you. 2) Chinese culture and WLB seem really hard, even when I interviewed there. However, it doesn’t seem that culturally different from Amazon. Hard working, no bullshit. 3) Major benefit is that it has the Biggest upside of the three due to pre-IPO. I say Work at tiktok for 4 years and then go to a place like Redfin once you’ve secured the bag. Amazon = security, Redfin = WLB, Tiktok = gamble on a rocket ship As a new grad, just seems like Tiktok makes the most sense for you at this current life stage. Amazon and Redfin seem like better choices for people with a family or something.
Thanks for the info it makes a lot of sense. I don’t care too much about making $$$ however. Came from not so well off family so I’m fine just taking the good WLB and enjoying work (dont have an extreme passion for coding, just decent enough at it) while still making 6 figures. Not sure if where I’ll be 4 years post TikTok is worth grinding through work over, compared to redfin at least, thoughts?
That changes things. Sounds like Redfin is the better fit. It’s in SF and has good WLB/culture. The only thing that could tip it to Amazon would be the clout factor. If you really care that your parents are proud to say “my child works at Amazon!” Which is a valid thing. But of course it’s personal. Do you think that’s a factor for you?
I wouldn't join a Chinese company, but ymmv
Yep, I would never. Case in point, Zoom: https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/china-based-executive-us-telecommunications-company-charged-disrupting-video-meetings "China-Based Executive at U.S. Telecommunications Company Charged with Disrupting Video Meetings Commemorating Tiananmen Square Massacre. Defendant Coordinated with the People’s Republic of China to Target Dissidents and Disrupt Meetings."
I would say TikTok or Redfin depending on whether you want money or work life balance. Engineering is good at both places. To give you some context, I joined 4 months ago and ByteDance valuation is already up 1.6x. We’re currently still only valued at $180B, while Facebook is $700B. We have products like Lark, Toutiao, and Resso that diversity us. Especially with these crazy DoorDash and Airbnb valuations, I think we will IPO at an even higher price than where we are at right now. Don’t go to Amazon. The WLB will be worse than TikTok, and compensation will not be as high either. Redfin sounds like a nice place with friendly engineers and good culture. Best of luck with your decision!
