Are there any Amazon/Microsoft swe that work in Virginia on here? I’m curious about the wlb, teams, and projects #Microsoft #amazon
How hard is it to pivot to the commercial side if you work in the gov side of amazon and microsoft for a few years?
Not hard. Its just an internal transfer like any other.
Really? I thought it would be hard because Microsoft federal says your employment is subject to holding your clearance. Do you also think there will be a bias to hiring someone from Microsoft federal since they don’t actually work in tech?

It's basically an extension of the defense companies. Boeing/Lockheed/NG etc. You aren't gonna get a tech vibe from the folks on those teams, nor are you going to get the tech brains either. It's just a bunch of defense folks looking to clock in at 9 and clock out at 5, and not do an ounce more than they have to.
I strongly agree with this. I’ve been there and done that personally. While the pay, benefits, etc are those of Microsoft/Amazon from a culture/vibe perspective you might as well just be at another defense contractor. Many people in these roles are former military due to the clearance requirements and that further reinforces that culture. Microsoft pays clearance bonuses which are nice but it didn’t outweigh the feeling of working for the DoD/Gov and I’m much happier working in corporate Microsoft in a real engineering team.
Right, I stepped in the cleared space just once at Microsoft and immediately told my manager I'm never stepping in there again and they moved me out of the cleared space 😂
