Oh dear, how Amholes work! One manager who defended a strong performer from being arbitrarily thrown into the bottom tier later finds himself being targeted for Pivot https://finance.yahoo.com/news/manager-amazon-boss-encouraged-quit-180800983.html #amazon
At least Amazon doesn’t hide their URA process. Unlike some companies that boast no pip no stack rack. But behind the scenes it is different.
Eventually everyone will be ineligible for rehire at Amazon such that they'll have to shut the place down.
LOL or the company is full of new grads who can't land a better place and there aren't many senior engineers in the company. Saw that worked for some startups, not sure if a company of amazon size can make it work
That explained why amazon joined the fomo to issue big money offers starting 2 years ago. They found that money is the last and only resort they have to attract people. Good for them that layoff hits and TCs are going to be reverted at least 2 years back.
At Amazon as long as you say ok to any shit to your manager wants and leadership wants you will be fine. Leaders don't always appreciate it when you go against them. This line is super critical. I once worked with an ex Amazonian who was an l7 and I disagreed to something he said. From there on he gave me hellnforcing me quit. My manager always asks me hey provide me feedback please provide feedback no way in my right senses I'm going to provide him feedback..no way at all
I can confirm that everything in this article is true (other than the manager being fired for it
The 6% target and the policies and intentions around it are all true. It is one of the more important goals to hit as a manager, because if you don't hit it then your manager needs to find someone else in their org to make up for it. So if you have 16 reports and refuse to fire 1 then your manager is now at risk for not hitting their targets and suddenly needs to find 1 more person from somewhere. So yes that could be, and often is, you, since you're the one who caused the problem. The correct action is you can object to their proposal for who they want you to fire, but then you need to offer up someone else from your team.
I get the dynamics but it’s just shit as hell. Not just at Amazon but whichever company follows this dogma
Right. I actually wouldn't mind if even Google set a target. There are lots of people who coast here and having them stick around is bad for Google and their teams overall. But 6% is ridiculously high. If Amazon set 2 or 3%, it would be a lot less controversial.
