Like cumulus and ons from Facebook and Sonic from msft they will take a chunk out of Cisco and Arista
This isn't the first time or the last time for such announcements.
My fellow Ciscoites should look really hard at Sonic. Yes, it sucks, but it finally delivers the common management plane that companies have been asking for since the nineties. They will trade _a lot_ in terms of features, knobs, etc. to get that. The management layer has been a huge advantage for Cisco forever and in merchant silicon use cases, Sonic puts the other vendors who are playing ball on equal footing. Some really stupid people at Cisco think NSO solves this problem, so it doesn’t matter, but that’s as far from reality as is possible.
The latest offering from Cisco, the Cisco 8000 supports disagragation. It can run Sonic on the platform. It is built upon one of the most advanced, in-house developed NPU called Cisco One. Here is the blog from a Cisco Fellow : https://blogs.cisco.com/sp/cisco-goes-sonic-on-cisco-8000 BTW, NSO is not the only option. Cisco offers programmability using industry standard and multivendor complaint API based on Yang Models which can be one of: Cisco native, IETF or Open Config
You completely missed the point. There’s just no other way to respond to someone who thinks that Yang models are actually an answer to common semantics in practice.
Cool Amazon NWO
I think the initial threat would be on Broadcom, Marvell, Mellanox and other network chip companies. The three points in this article quite cleverly put forth why it may not work. Amazon's entrance into anything is going to be challenging to deal with. But, networking is a bit old-school and progressions in that field are quite slow.
