Hi Simple question: is product management better at uber than at booking.com (in Amsterdam). Would it make sense to try to make a move? Money, people, type of work?
I only know one PM at Booking and it sounded that product management is awfully confined in his team. He had a small team and a small remit which did not sound very exciting. Again, I have a sample size of one. At Uber, in the AMS office we have a lot of space & freedom to operate in. PMs work with data scientists, design to come up with ideas and selling things to both product leadership & engineers is a lot easier. Impact is massive, each team / PM kicking off projects for hundreds of millions of dollars of incremental revenue or savings / year. This is large even within Uber, most teams have a smaller impact horizon. We also have a new Sr Director of product joined, who previously ran all of Payments in Google. Some even bigger plans in the pipeline. Already, a lot of projects in Amsterdam have to do something with the upcoming IPO. Another pro: the people. When it comes to engineering, we have a high bar. We have interviewed a _lot_ of people from booking and only a very few made it through. Also, the stories they tell of the eng culture paints a lot less sustainable pace or longer term view than what we have. Cons: part of the PM role seems to be still changing, across the company. So you would get a lot of space, but you could equally struggle with expectations not being all that clear, you needing to define some for yourself. Also, late meetings with SF - a lot of stakeholders are based there. I am not sure about comp for PM, but we usually pay top of the market with a healthy equity package as well & annual refreshers. Not heard issues closing people at Booking due to comp. Btw we just hired a PM from booking, so you can ask him as well what the difference is like.
