An SRE embarrassed our team.

Dude rewrote a critical piece of C++ infra x3 more resource optimized than us despite my constant push back as a TL saying it is a time waste/impossible. How can I come through this? I feel my image is very bad now.

"hey man, I was wrong. You did a great job and I shouldn't have doubted you. Keep it up" - stop worrying about your image and be a decent person.

I would give him a peer bonus. I would also chat with him in person and thank him for the contribution and apologize.
You want to form a partnership with him and your team

Be humble , you’ll be wrong a lot . And don’t instantly shut people down.
