Bloomberg reports: Apple is preparing to allow alternative app stores on its iPhones and iPads, as part of a sweeping overhaul aimed at complying with strict EU requirements coming in 2024. @markgurman reports trib.al/r4YqRrG Europe saves the day once again
Why would Apple do that? I seriously doubt.
Forced by EU.
This is a good move IMO. Google Play Store has the same 15%/30% cut, but Apple gets the heat because Android allows alternative app store. But not many people actually use alternative app stores like Samsung app stores. And those who are willing to pay via Apple App Store, will not bother going through hoops to save a few bucks anyway.
I can totally imagine people switching to another app store where everything is 30% cheaper... at least for the apps that I buy things from (uber, doordash, pomodoro, notion, etc) On top of that, we can finally have a platform-agnostic app store for Android *and* iOS -- it could have first-class integration with flutter/RN apps
Pretty sure physical goods/services like food delivery and ride-sharing are not subject to 30% cut.
Maybe we could get the tachiyomi app on ipads eventually
Installous and Cydia man
The og!
