Looks like they are trying to hide embarrassing chats and messages. This is deleting messages from zuck in Facebook chat. https://techcrunch.com/2018/04/05/zuckerberg-deleted-messages/ Update: originally I thought this was both email and chat but apparently it is only Facebook "messages" aka chat.
That kind of functionality should not exist, imo. Technical limitations should prevent this kind of thing from happening.
It's is terrible and deceitful. It also demonstrates clear hypocrisy. Since we can't conclusively delete our own history. It reminds me I need to download my Google mailbox.
Gizmodo has a follow-up article today. Seems like other people did it on top of Zuckerberg. It just really demonstrates the power dynamic between regular folks and leaders of these big companies. I don't think it's illegally but it's an abuse of their power.
"Corporate security" in this case means, "there were some truly damaging things in our emails and texts so we deleted them before somebody found them and sued us". Zuckerberg doesn't believe in privacy and I'm sure his messages were full of directives to violate it in numerous ways that Facebook wants to hide before Congress subpoenas it.
Its called a document retention policy, and most all companies have them
Except in the case of Facebook they are reaching into other people's accounts, people who don't work for Facebook, be and deleting content they think is embarrassing.
I read it more as the messages are deleted from the central Messenger datastore. So if you open your chat room with Zuck, you just won’t see his deleted messages. Not really sure they’re “reaching into people’s accounts”..
People who use Facebook for email or chat don't think that Facebook will selectively delete messages sent to them if it's desirable for Facebook. I predict now that Facebook will have to come out and say they'll never do this again.
Or give everyone the ability to put an expiration date on their sent messages.
How interesting. Another TechCrunch bullcrap. Sometimes I wonder how you can work in Tech but fall into these biased narratives. Maybe people in tech are not all so smart.
Seemed accurate to me

Yo dont you guys have any coding to do instead of just ranting on fb?
Sensionatializing fb issue is the new fad
Yea, looks like it
The "tech press" occasionally decides which company is cool to hate and gang up on it. This year for some reason they've decided Facebook is 100% responsible for Trump's victory, and so they're now the target of the sensationalism and ire.
Yeah it's just random, when they picked Uber it had nothing to do with the pernicious culture there it was just because of bad luck...
Not saying it's random, saying it's sensationalized even when there's a grain of truth to it. They attacked Amazon's culture too a few years back.

Please don’t post this faux-journalism. TechCrunch is sensationalist garbage.
Can you explain how this is faux journalism?
Interesting that two Uber people don't like this. Could it be that Uber has done some deleting of internal email?
