I am currently a frontend software engineer at Amazon. Since the second layoff, my team has become extremely toxic and demanding so I am seeking a new role elsewhere. Here is my work history so far: - Cisco/Cisco Meraki: worked here for 1.5 years out of university. The role was 80% firmware engineering and 20% frontend. - Amazon/AWS: worked here for a year so far and made the full switch to frontend. Any companies hiring frontend engineers with solid and supportive mentorship? TC: 230K average per year for 4 years YOE: 1.5 years in firmware and 1 year in frontend
If your manager isn’t pleased with the group them I’d expect the senior folks to get most of the blame so I would not worry too much. Also, the work schedule sounds normal for Amazon and not so much influenced by the times. I was working that schedule there years ago. But now is not a great time to switch companies
My manager and my lead engineer are codependent. It’s a pretty toxic lose-lose situation for everyone else. I’m sure a PIP is bound to happen so I don’t have much of a choice but to be prepared for the worst. On a side note, I was told in a 1:1 to take more risk and reduce the number of comments on my CR and it wasn’t communicated in a supportive feedback type way.
I would look at the glass half full here if nothing else. I know you want to jump, but Amazon should be able to weather the storm better than most despite the layoffs. Keep your head down and constantly ask for feedback. I would try very hard to hold on until the end of the year if you can, and just save whatever money you can as a precaution. I’ve been looking at the market for the last month and it is getting harder by the day. I also have two buddies who just accepted jobs elsewhere and the offers were revoked so there’s that to consider as well

Internal transfer if you can. Not a good time to switch companies with your limited work history.
I tried. Hiring is frozen at Amazon right now across the board. My situation is that I am on a 3 person team working on a brand new service. Each of us are doing 2-3 peoples’ work because hiring is frozen and we are severely understaffed. We rotate oncall every 2 weeks which has been very stressful and each of us are putting in 10-12 hours a day (including working on weekends). I currently cannot keep up with this pace and it’s been affecting my mental health. My manager has not been pleased with our output and considering that I am the most junior person on the team, it’s very likely that I will get PIP’d soon. My only option right now is to be prepared to find something when PIP does happen.
You don’t need to meet your manager’s expectation. Survival, but not at the cost of your mental and physical health. Think about your work with priorities, and cut corners on P2 or some P1 work. Opportunities might show up in the future, not right now.
