I lucked into a product role a few years ago, and have been fumbling my way around ever since. Every company I’ve worked at didn’t really offer anything in the way of training or mentorship. Boss was too stretched thin, or company was stretched thin. Other than what I’ve picked up on the job, I’ve been entirely self taught. Part of me thinks that’s just the nature of working at sub 200 employee startups. Do your companies offer PM mentorship and training? If so, what? Is it clear what you need to do to progress though the ranks? And if you came from a similar startup background and eventually went to a larger company, do you regret working for startups in a PM role first before going to BigCorp?
Try Product School or General Assembly
BOKF offers an Accelerated Career Track program that is very effective. Places you with a department and lets you move among the divisions to get multiple mentors in your field.
The training at Microsoft has changed. There used to be a multi day PM training when you first joined. I’m not sure if that’s still the case. Lots of individual offerings and Pluralsight accounts. Mentorship isn’t quit official, but there’s general practice of it. With that you get different outcomes based on the mentor and what you put into it. I️ assume all of the big companies have plenary of learning opportunities. You might want to look for mentors out of your company.
