Just curious what it's like as a parent with kids working at these companies. Do you feel out of place considering the makeup of these companies are mostly really young folks that have just graduated college?
Parents can be bros...
Don't ever think of Uber if you have kids - it will be hard to keep up. You will be considered as useless if you leave early for family. So if you live in SFO and you are < 26 yrs you will have fun as you don't know what work life balance is . Airbnb I heard is better one of my friend works from home on fridays - Uber work from home is a sin.
Half of my team has kids. They're doing fine both with work/life and career. It's probably different from team to team.
I have a pretty big team and only have less than 10 parents on the team. Have more issues with the non parents than I do with any of them. I have 2 kids too so maybe I'm biased but the wfh waiting for package doing x bothers me more than the I'll be in a bit late have to take the kids to x. I do feel bad when I have to ping anyone after hours regardless of kids or not, because I find myself sitting on my machine with my kids having to keep themselves busy while I work more often than not
On average, busy people like parents get more shit done in a given amount of time because they have to. When you're 26 you play a lot of football at work because it doesn't matter if you're there 12 hours a day. All your friends are there anyways.
Many of the ICs are pretty young, but my manager has kids, and so does his manager. The work schedule is pretty flexible and accommodating if you need it to be.
Thanks all. Really appreciate the responses.
So I am unfortunately in a bad team so I am leaving Uber
Sorry to hear, Southbay. Any specifics on the reasons? Thx.
Been here just 3 months , manager not letting me move , silly reasons - talked to HR and Skip level , nobody can help - sadly fell into a reorg immediately after I joined and got stuck - should have been cautious when I joined . Uber has many reorganizations and you will not do what you were hired for some of the times . Bad luck - hope I find something better outside , will make me relaxed.
Not great for parents but good compared the majority of tech companies.
I wouldn't say out of place but yeah out of all my directs and indirects only a handful have kids including myself. Does get weird sometimes
