I wanna learn about the company. I know It’s a hype stock since pandemic along with Shopify. Will it grow like Shopify and will be a good tech company to help my career? I’d appreciate your inputs! #tech #lightspeed #lightspeedpos
Let me know if you need a referral. Lots of runway left!
It will not grow like Shopify, at least sustainably. The reason is most retail investors don’t realize how different the 2 companies are. One grows with a lot of in house innovation, the other grows by way of m&a’s. Lightspeed does not have a strong eng culture, too many MBAs & consultants in management for their own good. Also as someone rightly pointed out, there is a massive difference between tech talent in Montreal & some other bigger cities.
Dm for any specifics but no we won’t grow like Shopify. Look at the percent of Shopify’s in house developments as a proportion of their total product offerings. Then do the same for us. You’ll see, almost everything we offer is the result of some acquisition, in house innovation & dev culture is Null. So no, I don’t think it’ll truly grow long term, stock may do well mid term because of hype & investors wanting to believe we are the next Shopify.
I am considering a position at lightspeed as a developer. How is the upside for growth? How is the compensation review process? Is it worth committing for 3 years considering the stocks they will give can be sold only after 3 years. Can anyone please help with some information? TIA.
I think the upside is good especially with the most recent reaction to earnings. Compensation is reviewed once per year. Your first RSU's are vested after a year and you can sell at that point. After that you vest more every three months. DM for referral.
Have things changed in the past few months? The stock is really taking a beating — how’s morale? Are folks optimistic for the future?
Leaders are talking positively in town hall and other meetings but the stock somehow seems to only go down. People in general seems to be pretty neutral, last couple of months attrition seems to be little stable but that could be due to the recession talks in the market. I think most of employees are just waiting for the tough time to pass, management has assured in a meeting that there is no lay off on cards so it seems a relatively safe place to hang out during the rough patch. Overall nothing great but not bad either. Just one point, for me the WLB is great, I am happy.
Thank you! I saw they’re still hiring, was curious about it. WLB is a huge one for me so that’s good to know.

Don’t trust anything coming out of Montreal
Why is that?
My comment was more of a generalization. Its definitely not true that nothing good comes out of Montreal, and I don't know much about Ligthspeed POS. But in general its about talent. You can't expect much from a market that has pay bands of 60k-100k CANADIAN for their top tier talent. I know senior SWEs making less in Montreal than entry level Marketing Coordinators in NYC (even taking into account COL and Canadian dolar it still seems ridiculous to me). I used to live in Montreal before moving to US. From what I experienced, people definitely don't have building their skills and work performance high on their priorities-- and for good reason when COL is low and salaries are even lower. Obviously this is not true for 100% of people, and good companies in Montreal will select from outliers, but the pool is not as strong as most US cities and even Toronto/Vancouver. Most talented people I know have left Montreal simply because money.
