Anyone else think that apparent commitment to diversity at Google is mainly hot air?
Hello all, I have 10 years of sales/marketing experience (including management) with other tech companies but for some reason can’t get past an initial screening at Google. They don’t specifically tell me it’s because I don’t have a degree but that’s really the only checkbox I’m missing and they don’t offer any other feedback. It’s not a personality thing neither because the conversations go quite well and I hand up thinking I earned the next step. Anybody able to get on board without a degree? Getting reached by a recruiter is the “easiest” way to get into Google. Even then, it’s very hard to get in for a variety of idiotic reasons. Don’t beat yourself up over it.
I’m just saying it may be something they claim publicly but what really goes on is quite different. Kinda like how some NFL teams may interview a minority coach to be in compliance of the “Rooney Rule” but never had any real intentions of hiring them. Who knows, but thought it would be worth asking the group 👍
Companies like Google aim for visible diversity. That is, you should be in an underrepresented race or sex. Nobody can tell in a group photo that you don't have a degree.
Thanks for that. I didn’t see a mention specifically regarding “academic diversity” so they very well may be referring to cultural/racial. That said though, academic diversity is also a thing, especially if the candidate has work experience that could be seen as a compensating factor don’t you think?
Not having a degree, unlike being a certain race/sex, is related to job qualification. For example if you don’t have a degree in Computer Science, you can still get into Google, but your experience really needs to shine. Like, maybe you need to have prior FAANG experience, be a contributor to major open source projects, be a successful startup founder, etc.

Wanted to also throw in “age diversity?” I’m not a spring chicken so maybe that had something to do with it as well? I know some companies think that younger candidates may be acquired for less compensation and who knows what other perceived advantages are placed on them.
Wow everyone is trying to get on the diversity bullshit bandwagon nowadays. You think you are diverse because you don't have a degree ? WTF 😂 They want black, Latinos and woman. Gays and lesbians are also ok if it's obvious they are by looking at them. It's all made for the group picture and for the the diversity section of their website.

Any diversity initiative that mentions blacks will always have people jumping on the bandwagon. Always.
I know someone that got into Google without a degree. If you were really good, the degree wouldn’t matter.
There is an program, engineer ambassadors, whose job is to hire people as SWEs who don't have traditional backgrounds or educations. It's not perfect but they do find some great people.
