Modi is a legend, will be remembered for centuries to come
I'm totally burnt out. I hate everything about my current position, the project, the team, my manager. I've been working crazy hours as a result I haven't had time to prep for interviews. I want to put in my notice, take a week or two to reset and then start preparing for interviews. The job market is hot right now so I don't think I'll be unemployed for long. I have some savings I can rely on and I can buy health insurance through COBRA or the CA marketplace. Has anyone ever done something similar? Any pros and cons? Any impacts on career that I don't see?
I just did this earlier this week and I’ve done it twice before. It’s great if you have some cash lying around to support you. Just make sure you can survive up to 6 months without income and other savings for any emergencies. It’s good to take a break and to feel well prepared on your job hunt because you’re doing only that full time. If you need to pick up any extra cash, you also have freelancing and short-term contracts as an option. I’ve used Hired for this before. Good luck and rest up!
Thank you kind person. I appreciate your input.
I’m in the same boat, I have few interviews lined up, some of them are looking like sure shot. No offers yet, but thinking of quitting now. Looking for help from, Kbbu76@ how do you handle the question about why did you quit without an offer? Or you just continue as if you are employed and don’t let them know about you quitting?
Sorry to hear that! Staying and getting more burned out is definitely not something I would recommend. Have you considered doing an internal transfer? Would that still require to prepare as seriously as applying outside?
It wouldn't but I've gone down that road a couple of times in the past couple of years. I've been with Amazon for a while so I think it's time to move on.
Yes, I’ve quit a job without a replacement lined up. My wife wanted to relocate to the opposite coast. I gave notice at work right away, and started job hunting. It was about 6 weeks before I even got an interview. Interviewed, got the job, and moved. Total of about 11 weeks with no paycheck. We wouldn’t have done it if we couldn’t afford it, but it worked out okay.
It's not a problem. You'll prepare better and since you'll have more time to interview you'll get more offers, which increases your negotiation power. Only con would be if you realize that you actually liked Amazon :).
My bf did that.
I’ve done this twice. Sometimes it’s the push you need to start the next thing. I think I might feel nervous if I didn’t have savings to cover 1 to 2 years worth of living expenses. The only downside is you might need to interview a lot to be sure you have multiple competing offers so you don’t get lowballed in TC.
I haven’t done this myself, but I’ve seen others do it and end up fine in a new position. Protect your mental health and don’t waste your life somewhere you don’t want to be.
If you have obligations like those and still quit with nothing lined up you’ll probably end up moving back in with mom and dad.
Or go for medical leave due to stress. Get the rest you need for a few weeks. You might realize a break is what you needed and reassess then. If anything you would have time to prepare for interviews. If nothing pans out you go back to your job, refreshed hopefully. In the meanwhile you keep insurance. To do this you will need a doctor's note. Burn out is a legitimate health reason, that can cause depression and anxiety. In any case, take care of your mental health. Good luck!
And after failing couple of interviews you are shitting your pants. Bad idea op.
That's what I'm afraid of.
None. One possible concern is getting lowball offers but you can just get multiple offers to counter.
