I was diagnosed with borderline ADHD as an adult. When I get really into a problem I can function well without taking stimulants but when I am stuck or uninterested, I need it. I thought I will stop taking the pills after finishing college but I found out I can really drag out a bug without it. Any insights on it? I really do think want to live my life dependent on stimulants because of the side effects (I tried everything and there is nothing that has no side effects for me).

Yes you need to take them for life.

ADHD is kind of a made up disease. There is a doctor named Leon Eisenburg who is often called the “father of ADHD.” Before his death he used the term “ADHD is the prime example of a fictitious disease” That said, stimulants work. Ritalin/concerta is generally given to children more than adults, but it has been shown to be less neurotoxic than Adderall. The method of action is different. The drug doesn’t bond directly to the receptors like amphetamines. It makes your body produce more. Adderall is a mix of l-amp and d-amp. Only d-amp can cross into the brain. L-amp gives physical side effects like a racing heart and sweating. If you haven’t tried it yet, try a pure dextroamphetamine (not the d-amp / l-amp mix that adderall is). Dexadrine is your best bet, but it’s not as popular with US doctors as it is in Europe. You can get similar effects as pure d-amp through vyvance, but the major downside is it’s extra hard on your liver because it’s a prodrug that has to be converted to d-amp in the body. It mainly came out because Pfizer’s patent on adderall ran out and they wanted something new to push. All these drugs are terrible for you and will eventually fry the reward system of your brain. There’s a lot of research out there if it want to weigh the pros and cons of taking it.
Can you give me a study with a high impact factor from a reputable journal ? Cause I have seen those “studies” and where they are published…
Specifically Methylphenidate
This is super subjective and a source:trust me bro kind of thing - but I’d recommend waning off all drugs. I have been diagnosed with borderline adhd and it’s all hogwash. I fixed my diet, started exercising and doing yoga and meditation and my focus has improved immensely since. I think the drugs are a temporary fix. Altering your lifestyle is the permanent fix. Some other things that have worked wonders - 1. Have a morning routine. It will really ground your focus 2. Eat a protein heavy breakfast. 3. Sleep on time. Shut off all electronics by 10pm
Appreciate
Do this
Before going all in on these drugs. Try a healthier diet. No Indian takeouts, at home no veggie oils. Take your B vitamins (yes a deficiency can cause ADHD symptoms), eat broccoli, sleep 7-8 hrs a day, go walk outside in the sun, eat enough minerals. Get healthier before you get ED and get bald! It’s all linked to a bad diet and life bro…
Okay sooo (Hope not doxxing myself here) I actually am working out extensively for around 7-8 years, good diet no bullcrap. Ed is no longer a symptom but was there for years (now I take lower dosage and have a loving wife) other than that, still hard to concentrate when I am not doing creative work (read - bugs).
If you want you should try even lower doses or eliminate it altogether. You could try other stimulants like l theanine etc. The side effects of these drugs are real but unfortunately some can’t survive without them.
1: Dr Belsham himself/herself could have an interest in marketing their book 2: they admit in the post that calling them an inventor is not true 3: while overdiagnosis of adhd seems fictional and indeed it is. It seems to be the correct first step still in order to get the patient into the right track ie thinking about their mental health, self care, self discipline etc. 4: marketing cocaine
Hey pal, i have one of these too. What worked for me is doing boxing/wrestling/MMA training and it really helped. Would recommend trying it out on a weekend in your nearest MMA gym.
I will try that!
Concussions generally fix ADHD 100%
First of all - if you’re getting the side effects you mentioned above, talk to your doctor. The only side effects I get from Ritalin are mild headaches after it wears off, otherwise it just calms me down and makes it so easy to just sit down and do something. The ones you mentioned are scary, the doctor will probably give you something else or change the dose. Second of all, maybe talk to your doctor about only taking it on week days and taking weekends off. This is what my doctor recommended and that’s what I’m doing and it’s nice. But at the end of the day you know best what works for you. After getting a diagnosis I explored every option for 10 years until I finally agreed to take meds and it changed my life. Before being medicated I couldn’t keep a job for more than a few months, I was expelled from 2 schools, I kept thinking that if I only try harder or work out more or eat super healthy diet or use a planner it will be fine. Now I have a steady job, a family and social life. But that’s just my experience.
Hey, now you’re at Googs. Big props
Oh also please feel free to ignore any neurotypical giving you advice, most neurotypicals are arrogant people incapable of empathy or putting themselves in others shoes.
What are the side effects?
Meth addiction long term.
Angry, short tempered, tolerance, ED
