What's your target number and progress? How long have you been at it? (financial independence / retire early for the uninitiated) EDIT: mine is 2 million. Currently at -18000. Only started working 9 months ago
When u reach 2 million, it may not be enough. Hope u factored in inflation
770k, target is 2.5m. I was always saving some money but seriously started 2 years ago.
My target was 2m$ when I started, now that I am inching closer to it, I have stretched it 3m$. Me and my wife are still in our early 30's and make 600-700k per year, so we will work until we can and then move to a low cost of living area.
Where do you guys work?
Is that $2m in liquid assets? Or net worth?
Net worth. Prob will buy a house at some point.
Target: 3m liquid inflation indexed. Progress: .87m liquid, 1.5m illiquid
Good work
Don't want to wait until retirement. Make good money and travel. Retirement is boring
Not happening. Working until the bitter end.
I feel like FIRE in America is impossible due to our broken healthcare system. Health issues will bankrupt you
Not accurate. At the moment there is ACA. When it dies one has to see what rises from its ashes. MA still has statewide (pre)ACA on its books. I may have to move to Boston in the interim.
So if you're 45 and don't have emppoiyer insurance say.... How much are you paying annually
My original target was 2.5. Then moved to 4 as I had kids and more stuff going on. Then was doing rewarding work at Amazon and the stock exploded. And then I started figuring I'd use extra to support charities and political candidates I like. Expect I'll retire soon, as I'm over my FIRE number, but not sure that retirement will suit me.
I don’t think you should frame it as “retirement”. Instead frame it as obtaining “fuck you money” that allows you to say and do what you want, because your opinions and actions are no longer coupled with a biweekly pay cheque.
Number keeps changing especially after having kids. We are going from “public school and student loan” to “maybe private schools, 4 year colleges + master degree” 😂. My spouse even talking about helping them with their first house down payment too. Not to mention, our parents are aging and might need financial help down the line so yeah, even though we have reached our FIRE number, we want to ride this tech boom as long as we can to optimize the earning potential.
