Anyone negotiate Bloomberg Data salary (not SWE)?

7 YOE in the data department with python/sql familiarity. Managing multiple projects, vendors, and client escalations on the data. Automated many processes and increased efficiency drastically over my time here, but feel no matter what else I do there is no room for growth unless I get a management role. There is no senior analyst or associate role here. Everyone outside of mgmt just falls into analyst pay band. TC this year just raised to 112k, all base as no one in data besides managers get bonuses. Anyone have success in negotiating this with Bloomberg (again, in data department, not engineering)? Also willing to hear where someone can go with my skills and what I should expect TC wise with my YOE.

DM for truist, traditional bank to retire with even data guys getting bonus. Dont expect FAANG TCs 😁

Bloomberg I <GO> Feb 16, 2022

Honest question. What do the ppl in GD actually do? Why are their TC so low? Are their skills very replaceable ?

Bloomberg gorignak Feb 16, 2022

Everything that doesn't require a PRQS. Honestly It varies drastically between ecosystems.

Bloomberg WHO <GO> Feb 16, 2022

Yep, this is right...some people in GD are just doing manual entry all day, others are writing terminal screens. It's pretty wild, and somewhat dependent on the relationship a data team has with its partner engineering team.

If you can do python switch internally to engineering?

Bloomberg BBMythBstr Feb 16, 2022

I think this is the best advice. Use internal mobility to PATH out . I have seen people switch to engineering go through FSD/Entry Level training. Your time in BB and understanding of other parts of the BB will be very helpful for sure.

Bloomberg nusakan Feb 16, 2022

If ur serious about improving your tc then you may wanna look into other non swe depts that could leverage your automation skills. For example quality assurance. Always a need for automation.

Bloomberg BBMythBstr Feb 16, 2022

Our QA teams, some of whom report into engineering, while improving to automate still has a long way to go to improve IMHO. @OP sounds like someone who is motivated to invest in themselves and improve. They might get far in Engineering vs QA. Engineering also opens up OP to future opportunities outside of BB.

Bloomberg nusakan Feb 16, 2022

I agree that engineering is the best. However not everyone may be ready for engineering right away. Thats why I suggested something like qa where you will get a better tc right away and then later you can switch to eng. Sometimes we gotta take baby steps. At the end of the day thats ops choice whether they wanna shoot directly for engineering.

Bloomberg lXoi08 Feb 16, 2022

I would recommend leaving, I am in a similar salary band with 3YOE and TL salary isn't very high either. You could try interviewing as an fsd if you wanna study for 6 months. Plenty of hedge funds are looking for data specialist and you can get anywhere from 140k - 200k depending on how well you can negotiate. Ps You can get a bonus as a non TL in data

Bloomberg KzGO87 Feb 16, 2022

Unless you want to continue in that kind of role/career, my advice is to ditch global data and join engineering. Fresh grads make 175+ here. You probably won’t get that right away at BBG. Switch to engineering, stay for a year or two, interview outside and you can make close to 300K without too much effort. That’s my two cents

Bloomberg niftygo Feb 16, 2022

Try to switch to eng or get out. GD pays way below banking and honestly most other analyst roles for young hires. It's really only worth it if you were hired at an already good salary and didn't expect it to grow that much. 5YOE at bbg, 9YOE in finance, 150k TC. And believe me when I say I think I'm one of the top earners in my Dept

Bloomberg WHO <GO> Feb 16, 2022

Let me tell you a story which might help you make a decision. After 5 years in GD, straight out of college...I was making 160K as an IC (not in the group which shall not be named). A few months ago, I was forcibly moved to engineering. Immediately I got bumped to 190K. Manager suggests I have plenty of upside if I keep performing well. That's the difference between GD and ENG.

Bloomberg profiler12 OP Feb 17, 2022

I'm guessing you were a DA3, DS?

Bloomberg WHO <GO> Feb 17, 2022

yep

Bloomberg halfdressd Feb 17, 2022

Make your way to Sales or SWE and stay at Bloomberg. When you look at total employment package and security you would have a tough time finding that at another company
