Would love to hear whether you think there's a decent number of SWE opportunities, salary ranges, what neighborhoods in Portland to move to, where all the tech startups are located, etc. Appreciate it! #jobs #relocation #portland #siliconforest
Watch portlandia. Do you want to live in this dumpster?
Ouch.
I just moved here two years back. Bad bad move. This place is so shitty do not move.
portlandia ... it’s a cultural documentary masquerading as comedy.
I moved to portland from san francisco. I very much miss working with really smart people who are current in industry trends as well as dedicated to quality and performance. Portland is more a town than a city and many of the people i’ve met in swe are comfortable and complacent. So, even if you find a really great role to apply to, be sure to ask them about swe community opportunities
"Comfortable and complacent" sums up Portland. It's lazy stoner Mecca.
I moved from NY to Portland. Maybe my experience is different because I'm at Amazon but I love it here.
I like it here (moved from east coast), not quite as gray/rainy as Seattle, and reasonable cost of living. TC 250k as SWE, which goes pretty far here. Traffic not too bad on the west side, and housing is attainable for professionals.
There are other threads on this, which you can find by searching. Portland sucks for SWE's, and in general. The pretax pay is much less than Seattle (on par with the Midwest but with higher COL), income taxes are much higher, the weather is equally bad, and the population is largely Portland's unique flavor of hipster white trash, with some redneck or dippy hippie elements as the city's sole form of demographic diversity. But they are so ubiquitous and uniform that it they don't even qualify as diversity.
