Apple

How would be easy to change the ladder of job function at Apple? If I join as automation engineer, how soon (if it possible) I can be transferred to SWE team?

Transferring internally at Apple is a nightmare. To put it in simple terms, it’s easier to switch from outside into Apple than within Apple. This is mainly because (1) you’d have to go through a full interview loop just like an outside hire (2) your current manager is informed at the beginning of the interview loop and this becomes awkward/dangerous if you don’t end up passing the interviews.

I switched internally and it was a great experience.

Did you have to redo the interview loop? What other companies are like this? Jw that seems like a huge hassle

Apple, in reality, is a huge company full of smaller companies. Every org or group does things differently (hence all the varying experiences). Some orgs gate keep who joins the org because the quality between orgs are so different. Also, at least at Apple, it is standard to require SW interviews when trying for a new SW job because the qualifications and required skill are so different.

@apple congrat for you! I am joining apple very soon, and would love to Follow up on the question: Yes, you could have intial meetup with future boss, but you still have to be interviewed by multiple team members to get the offers, right ? So it is still possible that you don’t get the new job but the current manager knows that you want to transfer.
