Hello, As a fresh PhD graduate, I recently interviewed and got offers for Apple Mac reliability (cupertino) and Intel yield group characterization tool owner (portland) positions. Please share insights. Any thought is welcomed. Providing more context, Family with one newborn kid. I got good vibes from both interviews. Initial numbers: Apple - verbal offer, soon to get numbers Intel - 125k/~12% combining bonus/35k rsu (Planning for further nego) Cons: Apple - roles seem to less technical... weak specialty building (?, personal guess) Intel - on call responsibility (seem to be improved in terms of frequency, but still there) TC - graduate student 🥜 #hardware #semiconductor
Apple reliability is a good team to be in within apple. You'll have a lot of power as that team often has overriding authority in decisions. They should also beat that Intel comp pretty easily.
I would suggest work for Apple. People move from Intel to Apple mostly, not the other way. Having FAANG brand helps to hope more easily even if you become better expert at Intel. Apple offer if not hiring freeze interupts will be much better financially. Also, opportunities don't come always. I am not sure about Yield Analysis tools unless it is software. Otherwise, it will be closer to defect metrology translating to yield impacts. Job market is more about brand, and honestly it is not difficult to find technically sound people, but it is difficult to find professional people in any place. Living in CA also gives you better opportunity in future. Portland weather is very gloomy and Intel stock is sinking badly. Next 2 years job change will be difficult since groups are already made. So, my suggestion will be move to Apple. I made similar mistakes by not moving in big names few years back and regret it when I find accumulated financial and career loss because I loved a project.
Hop not hope
Well said.
easy intel. apple as a new grad is very bad imo. intel lets u grow and expand, apple forces u to stay in ur place. im ex intel after many years moved to apple and i see how miserable i would have been if i started my career here. i also have kids and intel wlb is perfect.
Summarizing comments so far, Apple - the team is at decision making position, company reputation, location offers better future opportunities Intel - learning and growth opportunity. (Weather is a factor buyt I do not care much personally)
Op- The job at apple is way ahead compared to Intel. Not just compensation but the reliability role is way more translation and better scope in future than the intel yield tool owner. Don’t make this mistake
Op, those people who tell you about "learning opportunities" at their time don't know what intel has become now. Very few people who actually know their shit are left and they have plenty of work on their plate to teach you anything. You can always goto intel from apple in a heartbeat(well kinda) if you don't like it but going other way is very difficult. Take the apple offer and run. Good luck. Only thing bothering you should be wlb because of kid. I concur that my wlb is better than my friends working at apple
yeah.. no. plenty of talented folks still at intel. i only left a year ago and and even tho im a subject matter expert, many brilliant folks like me stayed at intel and are pulling this company forward and if ur ambitious there is always someone there to mentor u.
125k Intel Portland for phd is a lowball offer btw Apple will provide you more growth opportunities going forward as others have already said. You’re moving from academia to industry and are yet to find out how different the worlds are. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that Apple role will be less technical or that your first role is what you’ll specialize in throughout your career.
financially and family wise intel pdx. you will live like 1 ring above homeless in the bay. but long term stability ..apple
What if I can get an offer from austin instead of cupertino ?
austin house prices are 50-100% higher than in past. but yes apple austin cost of living would be only be slightly worse than Intel PDX.
Seems like different enough jobs that you should choose based on what direction you want to grow your career.
