I got a verbal offer from Apple for an SWE ICT3 role: 160k / 165k / 20k (base, total RSUs, sign-on). I was hoping to get an ICT4, but I flunked one of the interviews, so I assume that's why I got the ICT3 instead. I feel this is a low ball considering it's below my current comp: 185k / 220k / 10k (as Sr SW). YoE 8.5 (5 abroad, 3.5 in the USA). I'm happy at MongoDB with everything (team, manager, WLB, etc), except with my actual job as it's been really boring lately. The work I'd be doing at Apple seems more impactful, challenging, and "high-scale". Is there a chance Apple would at least match my current TC? Should I move even if the comp is below what I have now? #apple #swe #offer #tech
“Impact” is bullshit. You work to make money. The goal is to not work anymore. Lower TC means you have to work longer. Don’t work longer.
Good point!
Stay where you are and just do some side projects, never ever take lower TC no matter the company
If you have a good comp and wlb at Mongo, why not just try to move to another team? At Apple you'd be paid less and end up working long hours (Apple has a bad wlb reputation).
Well, yeah, not all the teams for sure. Here in Blind, mongo shows 4.4 (out of 5) for wlb compared to 3.5 of apple, but this is too general.
I wouldn’t take a pay cut to come to Apple. If you end up on a bad team your wlb is going to get FUCKED. Or if you have a bad manager…? See if they’ll come up but don’t accept a reduction in pay to come here. That’s Apple’s cultural arrogance right there. They want you to fall for the kool aid of working at Apple as if it’s the end all be all of companies. Try to look for some side projects or other opportunities on your team before you bounce.
Thank you for the feedback, it makes sense.
BongoDB did you give the recruiter a compensation number before they gave you an offer? I think you can negotiate a little on the offer, maybe 10k+ on each
I didn't give a number, the recruiter just told me those numbers. I just said that I would think about it because it's below my current comp. I'll try to negotiate.
For sure! Let them know if you have competing offers but you're still inclined towards apple. They don't ask to see offers (in my experience), so make what you can of that :) Also you can say that you're ready to sign the offer on the same day if they can meet your expectations
250k for senior position? that is insulting enough to leave
I don't think it's insulting. The comp could be improved, but the amazing WLB and nice people over here are a good tradeoff. Some people prefer $$$, some other people prefer working 4ish hours a day, surrounded by nice people.
They'll match your comp, at least they did in my case. Just be firm with your recruiter
I followed your advice and it went well. Thank you!
OP BongoDB, did you accept Apple's offer?
