Apple Performance Reviews

It’s not been long that I have been at Apple, last week I saw 6-7 employees sobbing in tears at Cafe Macs. Many of them keeping their head down but it was not too difficult to say what was going on. I am not surprised if it had something to do with their performance reviews. Talking to peers in my org, I can see some did deserve much higher ratings than what they received. Many already started to be on the lookout for switching teams or even company. Apple did a great job not laying employees off over the past two years, but I think it is still important for employees to feel respected, acknowledged, and appreciated. For many employees, being appreciated matters not less than the compensation they receive, if not more. Maybe Apple should have not pushed managers to enforce lower ratings to justify lower comp adjustments this year, but communicated transparently the limitations while still making hard-working employees feel acknowledged.
