I have a recruiter reaching out to me through LinkedIn. I'm currently working for Boeing with great WLB. Great WLB is important to me since I have a young growing family (spouse and toddler). The positions suggested by the recruiter are more closely aligned with the engineering work I'm interested in as opposed to the work in my current role. I would love to move my career forward in a better direction, but the WLB at Boeing is great for my family. I suppose it really depends on their offer (if I even get one), but what kind of offer would be "worth it to move to Apple"? I don't want to be lowballed. However, I know the brand name would look great on my resume. How is Apple's WLB? Can I expect 40hr/wk, 50hr/wk, or more? City: Houston TC: 120k YOE: 4.5 Education: Master's end of Spring 2024 (yes, Boeing-paid which is also an important factor) Apple position locations: CA, TX
Group and org dependent, but on average I doubt we can match “great wlb”. Also stick to Austin or San Diego. Bay Area is just too expensive to raise a family these days
Thank you for the honest feedback. What kind of WLB could I expect at Apple if you don't mind me asking?
Work life balance worth more than anything
Especially with a family! If I were on my own, I wouldn't care as much.
+1 I would say, stay with Boeing if you're happy. You might be disgusted by apple and regret it later.
Engineering sounds like a stress involved in it, I would stick to wlb + if there is not a need for you to “move”. Family + toddler is a lot of time if Boeing could offer that stick to it. Also, meta and other companies are laying off what if apple does the same soon, food to the mind
Always say yes to interviews. It can’t hurt. Might be a good fit. Or. You can say no, and they might not hire you anyway.
They will work you at Apple. I talk to people everyday working 70-80/hours a week. They pay really well because of this.
I can do up to 50hrs/wk, but more than that isn't worth it to me. Good to know
Whats your role?
Currently my background is EE (I don't want to be too specific)
Are you reached about for HWE org? Very org/team dependent but my WLB is great. I have two kids and I don’t have much work. Besides having to go to the office three times a week, I am coasting here with good money.
I believe so. It was hardware engineering. What you're saying is actually very encouraging to hear with the caveat that it's org/team dependent.
I’d try getting an offer and ask a lot of questions during the interview. Also feel free to DM me with the team or role I can give you some insights if within my org
Apple is a sweatshop and the Bay Area is awful. If you want to grind out a few years of hell for more money and a good resume, it may be worth it, but don’t kid yourself about WLB.
It’s org dependent. Many employees with multiple kids are able to manage just fine and have great WLB along with great pay to boot.
i mostly agree with mr hat on this one. also worth noting you probably see this at boeing too there are people who do things the slow and dumb way they take 3 weeks to do task you can finish in a few minutes i see a lot of those people at apple too and they need 80 hours to do things slow and dumb way but if you know what you are doing and good at your job 40 hours per week is too much for you but no timecard so you can have better wlb i know i do
