I used to be a TVC at Google years ago and had a horrible experience like many others. Is the contractor situation similar at Apple? TC: 0
What is TVC
Temp, vendor, contractor. An acronym Google uses to differentiate people hired from staffing agencies and FTEs.
It’s worst !! I am contractor. I feel depressed now….
I was SWE contractor at Google. It hurt my self confidence. They make you look like a looser with very prominent red badge. That immediately makes everyone look down on contractors wherever you go, juice bar, gym, cafeteria etc. I felt the FTs think we are mooching off stuff that’s for them. I decided I will never be contractor again.
My exact experience. I worked in the RLS office and had to go to the main office to get a new badge because I wanted to my picture retaken. Security followed me around as if I wasn’t allowed there or trying to do something suspicious.
Contractors are usually regarded and treated as 2nd class employees. Also expect a lot of your work and credit to be taken by the team, despite you being the one doing the work.
You don’t need credit, it will not give you bonus, retention etc. nothing! The only advantage it gives you is manager fighting for your extension.
Or maybe credit might get them referral to be fte. @Apple you sound nuts. If a person does good work they should be appreciated. It can help them in numerous ways. Simple. Rather than treating them poorly only because they are contractors
I was a contractor in a smaller hardware team, and while I had very little exposure to meetings and stuff, I was involved on black and ultra projects from the gitgo. Team was always great to me. I sat with some technicians in a different area but my experience was overall really good. Maybe it’s just my team🤷🏻♂️
Contractor here - Credit will never be given to you despite doing the work.
Why you need it? Doesn’t affect your bottom line. You are hired for specific work for a limited time
It shouldn’t matter if the person is contractor or FTE, if something good was done then recognition should be given.
Your experience at Apple will depend on the org you will be contracting for. Ask questions about the org you’re looking to get hired into: does it seem that they are looking for people to get the day to day manual work done? Or is there an opportunity to build with the team?
I’ll definitely do that when the time comes since my a few staffing agencies submitted my profile for a few roles.
You get treated like a 2nd class peasant no matter what you do and how hard you work at Apple. FTEs have different colored badges, and management treats contractors very dismissively. It's not worth it. Apply full time.
I’ve contracted at Apple. It was a nightmare but worth the experience. You’ll get offered contract roles again in the future, so my two cents is get as much experience you can to help you later.
It’s probably worse. I heard they have separate building for them entirely
Google has separate buildings and different color badges for many of the contractors now too
