How would you compare and contrast the work culture at Apple and Amazon? Bad WLB or confidentiality at Apple doesn't really bother me. But I don't want to be in a culture like AMZN where there's Focus/PIP and a lot of mental stress and toxicity that comes with it. Anyone on Program Management / BizOps / Finance side at Apple and can share experience? Current TC $120K. L5.
I was told you get made fun of if you don't have an iPhone
Can confirm. In a playful manner but true nonetheless
The company doesn’t give you one for work? Honestly though, besides the display and cameras, it’s not that good. I use a mid range Android as my personal phone and it’s lighter and more responsive and has better sound
You’ll make great money and probably have decent job security but will find (mileage varies by team) there’s a huge emphasis on perfection. Upward mobility is sometimes hard, depending on the org. Outside of engineering/design (aka you’re not building products) you may end up working with a lot of shallow materialistic types. Also, some managers do not sugarcoat and will be direct when your work isn’t up to par. I’d never heard of a PIP but definitely people just being managed out.
What's the process of managing out people? How do you know whether you're in trouble or not?
My husband’s a PM at Amazon and I’m and I’m a PM at Apple so I can share from that perspective if you want to DM me but note that these are big companies with micro cultures so don’t think of it as a blanket statement about this is how Apple/ Amazon are. There’s great teams and horrible teams at both and that’s how it works across all big companies (same with Google, Meta have friends who hate it and friends who love it).
Just sent a dm ! Agree that there are micro-cultures in large companies but would love to hear more about your experience!
Apple IDC is full of shitty people
Can you describe the culture a little bit more? What's the dynamic like in teams?
Lol! Sour grapes? :)
