With Microsoft laying off, meta and Google increasing pip, is apple even safe anymore?
Who told Apple layoffs?
Apple
If it was a question, OP should have put a "?"
It depends on how long this bad economy lasts. If let’s say by next summer, things don’t improve then I think they would seriously consider it.
Which is sort of insane. Apple has a pile of cash built up they could go on a massive buying spree in a down economy and capture more of the market
That’s what happens when your job is making the stock price go up. Cutting costs has little to no impact on actually saving useful money with their insane stockpile. It’s just to pad income
I am going to join Apple this December. I think Apple should be fine to weather this storm. I feel we are in recession for last 6 months. We probably have an year more to go like this. Apple can surely take it on. Also companies wont layoff if they see things are fine 6 months down the lane. So even if this macro conditions extend 6 more months into 2024, Apple should do just fine. Lets be positive!!
Joining end of Nov, hope you are right.
Joining Nov end as well ... I will be royally screwed if the offer is rescinded
I don’t believe apple execs in HW have confidence that they could execute a layoff without risking product schedule, which would be much more damaging than a slowdown in revenue. Teams run lean to begin with and it would be difficult to make across the board cuts. FWIW no layoffs in 2008, 2018 (china slowdown), or 2020 for FTE. Contractors always get screwed but full time is usually safe.
They did layoff a few hundred full time HW people from the Apple car team in late 2018/early 2019. I think given Apples company culture of secrecy sometimes it can be hard to tell what’s going on. iPhone was still very new in 2008 and the company was also much much smaller. The general economic situation in 2018 wasn’t this bad, while 2020 had a really really quick rebound after March. I’m sure they won’t touch the teams that work on iPhone but some other less critical ones like HomePod, iPad, Apple Arcade, Apple Fitness Plus, could potentially face some cutbacks.
IIRC there was a hiring freeze at the time but our org got special permission to accept headcount/transfers from the car team. To me it sounded like the project was canceled but apple was not trying to lay the team off, but that might be the kool aid speaking. Agreed on everything else. The company is very big compared to even 5 years ago and while there’s absolutely room to trim fat, the really hard part is figuring out where. There’s too much tribal knowledge and too many single points of failure to make it worth the risk IMO. If I were to do it all over, I would join Apple but only on a team that ships products that make money. It’s good advice for any company in the current economic climate.
Since when did Google increase PIP? Or is this just more speculation based on GRAD?
Even google has PIP ?
Now, yes
Every company has some form of PIP. The alternative is to just fire underperformers without giving them a chance to improve.
UsA?
When did Microsoft do a lay off?
