Apple (AI/ML, Seattle, ICT3) - 152k base - 70k RSU annually - 20k sign on Apple Y1 TC: 242k 2S (New York): - 165k base - 85k minimum annual bonus - 80k sign-on 2S Y1 TC: 330k Virtu (New York or Austin): - 150k base - 150k minimum annual bonus - 55k sign-on Virtu Y1 TC: 355k Graduating college in May 2023 with Bachelors. I interned at Apple this summer and got a return offer with my team that i didn’t really like, i also didn’t enjoy being in Seattle. Virtu’s TC is really out good for being fresh out of college but i’ve heard not the best things about growth / wlb. Two Sigma seems low for this industry especially the recurring TC Where should start my career? YOE: 0 TC: 0
Take virtu and font look back. That TC is insane. If you don't like after a year use that TC to negotiate higher at the next job
Not a bad idea if you’re okay switching into tech. 90% sure we won’t enforce noncompete for tech firms. But OP can ask the recruiter for details, not sure how uniform we negotiate them.
Idk what Indeed is talking about but don’t do this. You’re gonna hate your life if you get stuck in a team with hell WLB and don’t have time to interview outside. The small comp difference isn’t worth it
Virtu.
Interesting. TS culture is a lot better, no?
What would be your reasons for picking Virtu over 2S given that you work(ed) there?
WTF! Virtu seems to have increased their numbers by quite a lot, or they were probably trying to beat TS. Virtu culture is pretty hardcore, 12 hour days minimum from what I heard. TS has Google level WLB and is a better name than Virtu in this industry
Negotiated a lot with Virtu and they were willing to go up and up. Two Sigma is not budging with negotiations.
They probably have a fixed new grad offer
What type of interview questions were you asked ? Leetcode? Or ml questions ?
Virtu asked some weird ass brain teaser questions, that was essentially just like algebra word problems. Then some easy/medium LC questions and a lot of behavioral and past experience stuff. Two Sigma was just typical lc interviews with a bit of behavioral. Nothing more than LC medium
Two Sigma
What's wrong with Virtu?
Tech not very good, relatively high stress, non-compete isn’t ideal, no 401k match are some off top of my head. I think for some people it’s a good fit. But from a tech background you’ll likely be disappointed. If you’re okay with working super independently/little oversight, relatively long hours (60 normal, can get away with 50), and poor/legacy tech then it’s fine. Honestly I like working here but it’s definitely not for everyone, and it can be very frustrating dealing with old tech + same problems not getting fixed + continually putting out fires. There are pros though. You can travel to NY, Chicago, Canada, Europe, Singapore offices basically whenever you want several times a year. And if you’re a high performer you can have a super high impact and can work on very diverse things. Culture is also much more collaborative than at more silo’d trading firms, and personally I find the fast paced work environment intellectually stimulating.
Make a poll. 2s.
Do NOT pick virtu. Shit company with old ass culture. I would pick 2S, max the contribution to their fund, and leave that money in their for long after you leave 2S. Go there for 2 years, let your money grow insanely fast and then go to tech.
Join us, Google like culture with slightly higher pay. Not sure about the other 2S poster but my WLB is great, 45-50 hour weeks seems definitely outside the norm for non trading engineering teams. Your recurring comp will go up too and you should be hitting 300k pretty quickly if you’re good. Granted growth is slower past L4 but that matters less for new grads.
Past L4, do people just leave to FAANG for more money?
I see more exits to high profile startups or other trading firms. 2S pays higher or comparably to FAANG up until high staff level, but the generally better stability and WLB here makes moving to FAANG less attractive.
First year TC for virtu is now 355k? Ffs mine was <100k, and only after COVID years did it break 300k. (Did not have competing offers then) I swear this company is just out to make sure the 2017 18 and 19 hires get disillusioned and leave (almost all of the people from my batch had left)
Op had competing offer from 2s and leveraged that. Also it looks like they have background in ai/ml which is typically higher pay than regular swe
Also you mean yours was 100k less?
