Watched the nineteen eighty Fortnite video and laughed. There was Spotify last year was it (?) that brought Apple's practices to question, now Epic... I watched the video here: https://www.cnbc.com/2020/08/14/apple-removes-fortnite-from-app-store.html Poll question: Do you think Apple engages in aggressive anti-competitive conduct? I do. (I realize the poll isn't perfect...write your opinion below).
According to internal Apple blind forum. 77% of us agree with daddy Tim. Have you read how Epic games does deals with game companies so they can be the only company who sells that specific game? What do they do because they the only store who sells it? They surge the price. Now they come to the Apple store and act like the victim.
Which Tim?
Tim Apple
Epic has the freedom to sell on other platforms. It’s like a store leasing in a shopping mall and pay rents. If you think the rent is too high, then find another place.
Isn't the problem that there is no secondary app store for Apple/no way to sideload it like on Android phones?
@AF621 - why should their be? Apple invested in making a great product in the iPhone, they aren’t forcing anyone to buy it, they don’t have a monopoly on making phone calls or sending texts. It’s equivalent to some high end cars only offering maintenance at their “certified” showrooms- they obviously do that so they get a cut of the maintence costs
I'll wait for one reason how taking away control from apples app store that they spent years and millions of dollars that other companies like Samsung or android didn't want to is good for the consumer in anyway. The only thing I see is epic and spotty trying to get more money for free. Paying employees, marketing, r&d all the stuff that it takes to develop the products customers throw money at Apple for cost money. If Spotify and epic don’t like it GTFO the app store. One day I hope many of you have ambitions to be the next Steve jobs or bill gates. If your voting yes your tanking your future dreams. It's a free market. There is no monopoly. Customers if they didn't like the practice and didn't think it was said would switch to a product that didn't and apple would adjust accordingly once they aren't top dog in app market. But they are. The only thing apple should not be able to do is market there apps higher than others without the justification of reviews. If your looking for a monopoly go bust Facebooks standard oil 2.0 playbook.
I stayed away from apple for as long as I could. If their os wasn't built on Unix and retain that I wouldn't bother. luckily I don't have to pay the premium for their hardware, company money. If apple were a car company they would make custom gas nozzles so you would have to visit their gas station. Custom keys only they can service, etc... Basically anything and everything to assimilate you into their ecosystem. The hardware you buy from apple is useless if apple didn't exist. That's a problem, because that hardware is mine, and I'm not paying for a paperweight. It's only a matter of time before either the world is owned by predatory behavior such as this, or it gets stomped out by legislation.
The difference is that Apple competes. It’s not the 30% it’s that Apple also has their own music streaming, their own arcade, their own video streaming. Those are what concerns people.
Adding 3rd party payments in the App Store is a can of worms. The rigid guidelines are part of why iOS has mass market appeal. People don’t have to think about who has their cc number or how to side load an app. If they wanted that, there’s a more open platform to do it, it’s called Android.
This is a BS copout excuse. The real reason is money in Apple's pocket. It us up to the consumer to decide not Apple. They have a monopoly and they are leveraging that for maximum profit at the expense of the Developers that add the value to it! Apple would be nothing without the 3rd party apps that have enriched their platform.
How do they have a monopoly with 17% market share?
how is this a new move? i used to work for comixology, when amazon bought them the first thing amazon did was remove in app purchases to avoid paying 30% (this is what made comixology unsustainable) https://www.theverge.com/2014/4/26/5656468/comixology-ios-update-removes-in-app-purchases
No this is pure capitalism. How are you gonna tell a private company what cut to take?
That's what anti-monopoly laws are for. Otherwise a company can "win" the game. It's not fair but it's the only way to save that area of the economy
Where is the monopoly? Apple isn’t obliged to allow other app stores on their own product.
Why is only Apple being highlighted in here why not play store from google? So you guys are saying its ok for play store to practice their conducts and apple cannot?
I think the big difference is android allows side loading apps
You can still install fortnite without the play Store
One point I think a lot of people missed is Epic games increases their margin double digits with this change. They're condemning others while boosting their profit. While virtual currency supports development, it costs nothing to create. If they could survive on $6.99 before, why tack on the extra $1 while blaming Apple and Google? Regardless, I'll still play the game. Don't forget to use code: ScottP in the item shop.
Lmao 😂
epic is also looking to pass some savings back to the customer. I think It’s fair to say that there isn’t enough flex in the App Store policies to allow for customer choice... even when you consider mainstream options. As a more micro example of the shitty anti competitive things Apple does... when you buy an Apple Watch with LTE, apps like Spotify still don’t work via lte without your phone near by. Unsurprisingly, Apple Music works perfectly fine.
Rather than working out a special deal they blatantly broke the rules of the App Store and then got pissy about getting banned.
Maybe, just maybe, the app store rules are unlawful?
I agree, but 2 wrongs don't make a right. Throwing a hissy fit doesn't fix anything. Other companies have directly contacted apple and set up contracts to avoid the fees. Epic games just threw a hissy fit.
If a grocery store is allowed to sell the bread it wants, App store owners should be allowed to sell whatever apps they want on their platform. Freedom of choice. If you don’t like it there are always other platforms to sell on :) This is capitalism pure and simple. If someone has a problem, come up with a better app store or market your app differently or play by the rules of the platform you want to sell on, you have options
Then you decide to go buy it from the competitor and not from this grocery store. This grocery store hasn’t forced you to buy their more expensive bread. Customers have that choice! If Epic doesn’t like the policies of the AppStore, they have the option of hosting it on other platforms
Eng why did you move into a student dorm that won't let you have a kitchen or toaster or whatever and why didn't you just get your friends and get an apartment off campus? Same concept dude.
