Apply for a job where the hiring manager knows your manager?

Hi, I recently found a job posting for a great company for a position that would be the next step of my career. It seems like it would be a great fit .. but Iโ€™m hesitant to apply because the company has been trying to swoon my manager to get my current company as a client. It seems dicey to put my current standing at risk, but the opportunity feels too good to pass up. Halp?

Difficult spot. I would hope that the hiring manager would have some ethics and not say anything. I applied at three partners of a previous company and they all knew my VP and CEO, nobody ratted me out.

Yes, make it clear up front to them that you don't want your current company to know that you are exploring. Anyone who isn't a complete jerk should respect that.

Look up hiring manager's history. If s/he looks like an A-player, there's some hope. Otherwise, high probability that you'll be ratted out.
