Applying at Amazon?
Thinking about applying for a SDE role at Amazon. When it comes to referrals, do I need to find a specific role to be referred for? Or is it just a general referral for a given level and they match you with a team if you clear? Or either? TC 125k YOE 2.5 #Amazon #engineering #sde
Fresh grads AFAIK at whirred generic and then have the opportunity to do a team match. Experience would be team specific. P.S. there are many other companies where you would feel more satisfied and less slavery feeling. Do think about that. Apply the Amazon principle "Are Right, A Lot", by looking elsewhere.
I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about the culture at Amazon. Any thoughts on how to weed out some of the bad teams with negative culture/pips? Or is it just SOL anywhere you go?
Amazon's culture is cutthroat. They industry that Amazon revolutionized/created, required it to be frugal and be on the toes. That's their DNA. The DNA has been set, the baton is passed on, thus the culture. People join Amazon either unknowingly or knowingly that they want to feel the grind and emerge as better engineers (and stocks). Well if thats true, engineer from any other company should then be shit (which isn't true). There are better ways to learn and prosper professionally with right amount of shit around. After all, YOU LIVE ONLY ONCE. Will it make sense if someone's work week is 7 days ? Slavery was long abolished (wrong if it's amazon). Thus, there are ways to progress, and make a dent without treating employees like slaves, but Amazon happens to choose the the shit side. And to mask this shitty treatment and PIPs, they have the "Leadership Principles" put in place.

Best company to work for if you want to kill yourself
Just use Amazon / AWS as a warm up interview for another - any other - more employee centric tech company. I don’t want to ramble on about it’s many problems so just search Blind for Dev List / Focus / Coaching, PIP / Pivot, OLR / Talent Review, stack ranking, bad WLB, backstabbing, abusive management culture, frugality, RSU clawback etc. Avoid Amazon!
It is specific to the role. And don’t apply ahead of the referral or it messes things up.
