I am a Technical Product Manager- in a non FAANG company. I have 7+ years of experience with some of that in product management. I moved to the US during Q3 last year and had to take up opportunity as PM-lll (L5 equivalent in Amazon) due to the market. However, I had been doing work equivalent to Senior/Principal PM in tech companies- working on a 0 to 1 product, partnering with 3 SDMs, 2 Engineering Directors and ~20 engineers. While my stakeholders are extremely happy with my work, due to internal team politics, my promotion is getting delayed. l believe that I am capable of the Principal PM role in FAANG companies. Wanted to know how strict are hiring managers on the previous designation when hiring for a certain level from outside. Are they flexible to hire a good candidate at a higher designation even if they are not at that level in current organization?#productmanager #product #pm
Possible to bounce 1 level up but not 2 given you also have less than 7 YOE in product. And with you saying some in product it doesn’t pain a picture on how close to 7 years it is. Leaders want to see consistent success across an extended period of time at a senior level before considering for principle in FAANG companies. A lot of times, they will also look for leadership experience. Also, team size doesn’t necessarily equate to leveling. It’s all about the impact you have made and what YOU have led teams to build.
Thanks
In FAANG it is 10 yoe minimum to get an interview for L6 PM. For L7 it’s 13 yoe + equivalent job title or higher to get an interview. You only have 7 yoe so your best bet is to stay patient and get promoted while at Amazon then jump.
That's a google L6, amazon L6 is like 4 yoe. But yeah L7 Amazon, L6 Google is 10 successful years in product
Amazon L6 is 5 YOE. Speaking from experience. L7 you can find some that are looking for min 7 but you will be competing against much more experienced candidates
There's nothing stopping you from trying! But you're likely an L6, not an L7 at FAANG. If you are able to beat the L7 interview and are hired as an L7 you might have a tough time surviving or have a ridiculous WLB.
Your scope only sounds PM or Senior PM tho…and often times, when joining FANG from non-FANG, they’ll down level you
@apple What do you think is a Principal PM’s scope? From what I’ve seen, L7 PMTs have larger org wide scope where they have to work with L8s to influence product vision and strategy. L6 PMTs mostly own features or smaller product areas. Reason I’m asking is I’m prepping for L7 PM roles at other FAANG (10 YOE/ 5PM + 5 DS) and want to ensure my behavioural responses capture larger scope so that I don’t get Down leveled.
If you aren't even a senior yet then you aren't likely to get principal. But you could switch to a senior in FAANG or. Group PM role elsewhere in tech and pick up the 3 or 4 years you need. Just pick an area you feel strong at growing in and focus there, the 4 years will go quickly and if you pick the right role your comp won't be much different.
Can someone just tell me how to get in at Amazon? With 5 years product experience; 12 years in IT, I don’t know how/who to present myself for consideration. Any recommendations for standing out among the competition. Serious answers only please.
lol
😏 Did you see any principal PM JD? Please Google it if you have not.
I passed an L6 PMT-ES loop at AWS and a Principal loop at MSFT and I had zero prior PM experience (but 15+ years of semi relevant experience) when interviewing. Anything is possible if you can frame it/sell it right in the interview process.

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
With under 7 years of product experience you’re not at Principal, sorry.
What about PM not PM-T? Does that also need minimum 7 years of PM experience?
Amazon L6 senior pmt with mba promoted to L7 principal pmt in <5 years in some teams. Just need to be in the right team and be well liked. So yes but you need to have credibility. You can browse LinkedIn to confirm
