Hey, Went to apply for my TN-1 visa this morning as a Computer Systems Analyst, got denied because I answered yes to “will your job involve programming”, and programmer is not part of their interpretation of the role for CSA and is a different position that is not under NAFTA stuff. My actual role will be Software Engineer at SF med-sized company. So my immigration lawyer decided it would be best to apply again as an Engineer, since they have a sworn statement that I will be programming. But this could be troublesome since I have a Bachelors of Science, specialization in Computer Science instead of an engineering degree. Has anyone had experience with applying as an Engineer without an engineering degree? Were you able to successfully obtain your TN? Anything you ran into that helped you? Thanks! Makes no sense. So Software Engineers, Data Engineers, and ML engineers would be all decline because it involved programming? 🤨
Yeah, no idea. All my other friends who got their TNs said they were never asked anything about programming, probably just got unlucky with this particular officer 😕
Yes. I got one easily. Same degrees etc. My company did the paperwork, I just showed up.
That’s relieving to hear, thanks! Hopefully same thing for me 🙏🏻
Ridiculous given the occupational handbook lists “Programmer Analyst” as a title under CSA. I’ve had both Engineer and CSA TNs approved at PoE and and by mail. I don’t think your prior statement is supposed to impact subsequent attempts, but you’re safer trying to fly since they can’t ban or detain you at a Canadian airport. The unfortunate thing is firms like Fragomen are trash and CBP doesn’t want you bringing a lawyer, so you end up needing to do your own legal research.
Damn, I see….fthe👮♂️ indeed!!
So the CBP officer thinks that only someone with an engineering degree can perform a “programming” role. What if someone had an electrical engineering degree and said yes to the programming questions? This all seems ridiculous.
Your degree has to match the job and TN position
Hi I had exactly the same issue like you. We can have a chat.
Just got it through USCIS no problem, engineering classification. I have a bachelor’s in finance.
Congrats! This was through submitting your application to USCIS right? How long did this process take?
A month for the lawyers to prepare the package, 4 days once it was received by USCIS (premium processing)
Yes you should have never said your going to program on a CSA. They will deny it immediately. Also to be an Engineer in Canada is a accredited term and you must have the proper credentials. You could get away with computer science degree but they will question how a science degree correlates to your job so be prepared
Update for anyone who finds this thread later: I got my TN this morning from Peace Bridge as an Engineer! Feel free to pm or reply if you have any questions, definitely need to be prepared with why your CS degree is relevant, and provide original degree and transcript.
Congratulations! I should have mentioned this earlier, but if you need to go through the process again while the cost is higher I would recommend doing it at YVR.
Thanks! Absolutely, got called into secondary by CBP officers again at Pearson when finally departing to the US. I got through, but god damn I’ve had it with Pearson!
You must be new to this world, Computer Science working as a Software Engineer is a common thing
(OP here, changed username) I don’t understand which part of this post led you to believe I think CS working as a Software Engineer was uncommon? Especially since I mentioned I am one of those people?
You believed applying as Enginner with your Computer Science degree is bad, even though it's a common knowledge that Computer Science is mostly engineering

Most ridiculous. 99.99% of people coming in as "Computer Systems Analyst" are programmers.
Yeah man, I answered with “building software solutions to blah blah blah” the previous question when they asked what responsibilities I will be doing, so I thought when they asked about programming it was just like clarification or w.e. 🥲
