A friend of mine is a software developer at Amazon and she suspects her managers are intentionally delaying her promotion to get more work from her without paying her more. She has been with AWS at her current level for 1.5 years and is working on her promo case, but her managers keep pushing back the timeline for presenting her case to the promo committee. She indicated she'd like to move forward earlier to get the committee's feedback, and they recommended against it. This conversation gave her the impression that they would prefer her promo was delayed so they could get more effort from her for less comp, thus looking better themselves. Is this a thing? Are Amazon managers evaluated based on how little their direct reports are paid? Blind tax: my Indeed TC is 95k, <1 YOE. Not sure what my friends TC is but I think it's around $130k. She has 1 previous YOE plus the 1.5 at Amazon. Edit: there's also a thing she mentioned where there's stock award overlap if the promo occurs before 2 years with Amazon and they might be waiting for that. Is that a thing? #Amazon
I mean with 1.5 years he may not be performing at the next level. Also not everyone deserves a promo.
Not saying the promo is or isn't deserved, just wondering if the delay recommendation is only performance-related or if it has anything to do with my friend's guess as to the reason.
No managers generally want to promote as it makes them look better and they can also move up
Not a thing. Managers don’t gain any benefit whatsoever from keeping employee compensation low. For a good manager, this is an issue of readiness. A lot of times, the employee is really not ready for that promotion (there are gaps in tech/soft skills) and they just have a hard time acknowledging them. So managers struggle with building up a case for promo that will quickly get shut down during review if the data to justify it is not solid. No manager wants to lose the respect and trust of their leadership by putting forward a promo doc that can’t stand on its own.
What would the incentive be to delay promo? Managers also get evaluated on hiring and developing the best. They don't pay the increased TC out of their own pocket. I have yet to hear a manager say i want to delay the promo because of getting cheaper labor.
Exactly and the manager moves up if the ppl underneath do
