This video is brutal. I don’t need a visa and so I am not familiar with the H1B process but I didn’t know it was this bad.

It's pretty bad. My company doesn't promote people on visas, underpays them, delays their visa process so they can't move to another company. Very few Americans stay in the company for long but h1b workers have spent 5+ years here. It's a less talked about issue but it does feel like slavery :( Of course no one says 'you are on a visa, you better remember that and complete this chunk of work' but everyone knows deep down that you are being abused. Outside of tech, limited companies offer visa sponsorship, they rely on contractors who are all underpaid visa workers. I was asked to travel and move repeatedly more than I would like, transfer to SF from a low cost of living area with only a $5k pay raise. When I raised the concern, they subtly hinted that the visa renewal dates are coming up. So I took the $5k raise, broke my lease, sold my car and moved to SF for 6 months. After that project, I moved to Philadelphia for 3 months, bought a car again. I would have quit if I were a citizen. It's painful :(

I think all the tech companies in Bay Area abuse the H1b .

Amazon AMZNBucks Sep 27, 2019

Lmao it's not just the bay area, all tech companies in the US (I've seen it often in the Midwest) abuse the system. It's definitely not used as intended, to bring in top talent that you can't find in the US. Before Amazon, I have often seen it used to bring in cheaper employees who are less of a flight risk to work on the services nobody else wants to work on

At my previous job I saw this so much wide spread! There were entire teams that are full of H1B and very unfortunately they used to be asked to come to work on weekends while no one else would be asked so because we had the option to quit and go somewhere else but they didn’t have that. I remember them coming to me and telling me how their manager used to remind them about their VISA status before asking them to stay late and work on weekends. But I just couldn’t do anything about it until I hated the place and just left.

Corporate Slavery

Facebook liam Sep 27, 2019

I don't believe Google/FB abuse H1b unlike some other companies. Techlead is the first person for me who thinks its the case at FB.

Amazon weeeeeeee Sep 28, 2019

What’s with the obsession with this guy? He got fired.

Amazon GoneWrong Sep 28, 2019

Amazon doesn’t discriminate based on H1B status, everyone is fucked equally !!

Airbnb FHxp07 Sep 28, 2019

Is it stressful working there? Yes. If you don't want to be so stressed, would you take a 50% paycut? No. You aren't going to make all this $$$ without pressure, why dont people get that?

I'm wondering if it would be possible to do a depression/happiness survey for a few employees of every company and compare the results. Don't know how to get started though :/

Microsoft research is working on SEAL and homomorphic encryption, enabling what you’re talking about with very little privacy risk. It’s amazing fun as your mind races just thinking about the possibilities, look it up.
