I started a new job at a new company and a coworker recently let slip how much money they made. It was significantly more than mine. I was caught off guard because they have quite a bit less experience. I stumbled upon Glassdoor and found out that I'm at the very bottom of the average salary listed on Glassdoor for my position at my company. Are those salaries reliable? Am I underpaid that much? #dataengineer #salarycomparison #salarynegotiation
Fuck no, Glassdoor salaries are not reliable at all. Levelsfyi and taking to people is reliable!
Yes but consider inflation and that those salaries might be outdated. It might be that you got underpaid, but in my experience yes they are reliable.
it is years behind
From my experience, salaries tend to be within reasonable range of what is listed, but they have no way to accurately capture other comp like RSUs, sign-ons, etc.
I no longer use glassdoor for comp information. The numbers are all over the place and you can't really tell anything from it. Levels.fyi is much better even with spam and mistakes.
Glassdoor salaries in many cases is 50% of the actual salaries. Levels.fyi is more accurate, even better will be to search the lca postings that will give you an idea of the base component.
Lca means?
Glassdoor, at least for tech, is way too low. It's outdated info plus often things like RSUs aren't included. If you're making less than Glassdoor says, then you're really underpaid.
In my experience Glassdoor is about ten percent below the truth. Sorry.
