A Product Manager should have a background in SWE imo.
I’ve never understood the hatred overly conservative-types have towards videos like this. There’s no hard evidence that ADITL videos contributed to mass layoffs more than a lack of ZIRP and collusion between tech companies did. What people and companies fail to realize is that certain positions, by their very nature, are not meant to strictly generate revenue, but to improve hidden aspects of a product—cohesion, user experience—and team quality—prioritization, advocacy and minimizing administrative overhead. PMs have their value because they handle work that would otherwise be piled on to engineers and designers—the more technical ones analyze the data and try to extract the most value out of their team and reports. I think of them like the Team Principal in F1; not at the CEO level, but responsible for getting their portion of the product to a satisfactory level. With that being said, companies abandoning specialization as a hiring tactic is only going to backfire in the end—people cannot be expected to work three or more jobs for the price of one and an overloaded team means more turnover, more time spent on knowledge transfer and a lesser experience overall. Is the conductor of a symphony a bullshit job?
Yes it’s a bs Job Sincerely someone who went to school to be a PM but became a SWE because I can actually bring value
PM’s are highly valuable but there should be less of them. And the ones that are in the industry should have a track record of creating great products themselves imo.
Lol PMs dont "create" product.
The great ones do
