I’ve been working retail for the past 2 1/2 years now and have really just hit a dead end. Currently 20 years old majoring in marketing. In all of my free time though I’ve learned an absurd amount of Swift and really want to pursue iOS development. I know how competitive it is in the bay for paid internships and someone who isn’t even majoring in Comp Sci doesn’t stand a chance. However I’m literally okay with not getting paid anything and just being a fly on the wall. In addition to that, if anyone knows anyone offering any marketing or advertising internships I’d be equally as ecstatic. Since this a great platform for all the companies in the bay, I was wondering if anyone knew or works for a company that’s offering anything right now.
Wait, side note. Of you're only a sophomore, why don't you just switch to engineering major?
Heavily considered it, I’ll be taking a couple CS courses next semester. I understand that having a solid foundation in python, basic, and c# is beneficial and won’t hurt me. However I’d much rather focus my time purely into iOS. Either way, thank you for everything, I’m going to start networking as much as possible now.
I think you missed the point. I've had friends hired onto mobile teams without much prior iOS/Android experience, but they were very strong CS majors and had done example projects that showed their flexible skillset. The easiest way to get a company to take you seriously as an engineer is to show you can switch into a CS major "late" and still kill it in your classes and finish on time. Your classes will also help you build up a portfolio of projects to show recruiters. No tech company is going to be strapped for cash enough that they care about you offering yourself for an unpaid internship. A bad engineer will cost way more than paying a premium for a highly competent one--not saying you aren't or can't be, but you're going to have to figure out very blatant ways to signal it or recruiters will just glance over your resume for the long list of Stanford, MIT, etc applicants who want the position just as much as you
Now every time I see apple on here I’m going to think it’s retail :( . On a more positive note, you should change your major to like CS.
Every time I see Amazon I think it's fulfillment...
Fulfillment employees don’t get emails
It will honestly be easier to just look for paid openings. Asking to be unpaid would raise a lot of questions IMO. Maybe expand your search beyond Bay Area?
Like where? I was born and raised in the Central Valley. Do you think there’s anything out here? Or Sacramento?
For sure dude. Try to find local startups, they have much lower standards and don’t get as many applicants
Focus on getting core CS skills, dont just learn Apple technologies. Why is your focus so narrow?
When you’re surrounded by Apple technology every day, and see the crazy stuff that’s made in the IOS App Store, it’s motivating and fun. There’s really cool things that’re exclusive to iOS that’s impossible to develop as well on other platforms.
I respect your enthusiasm, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say there are exclusive iOS features that are impossible on other platforms

My suggestion? Find a contract job at a tech company doing whatever. Network and learn and try and get converted
